I've always used dashes like this:

Thing - Other Thing

But some people use them like this:

Thing- Other Thing

And I have no idea why... The space on both sides of the ' - ' makes sense to me, but why do people jam it onto the end of the word?

@rasterweb the words- as in the words themselves- told me the letter S is a little kinky and likes it there

@rasterweb could be simply not paying attention when typing. I’ve found that I end up with that exact structure by accident when what I wanted was space-dash-space.

@c20d It should be caught during proofing then, before publishing, right?

@rasterweb you’re 100% right! If you’re using the dash as an em dash — to add information to a statement like this, for example — the proper typographical style is to place spaces on both sides of the dash. People who put a space on one side and not another are just monsters. Or they are listing two or more modifiers in front of a subject, e.g. “troll- or lycanthrope- or vampire-like beasts.”

@rasterweb but once-in-a-while we use them like this

@iaintshootinmis If you're up-to-date on the usage... yes!
