@pixelcats this probably doesn't make as much an impact outside the US, but the main problem for some of us with twitter is the way it is being transformed into a white supremacist platform just in time for the US elections, and not as much (although that sucks too!) that it's corporate and eats our data. tbs, but i don't think threads will be quite as straightforwardly fascist as twitter, and that's a big difference for me. the way i see it, most twitter people are just not going to come
@pixelcats here, and that totally sucks, but i could see them giving threads a shot, and if that means i get to stay on masto and still be able to engage with the fandom i have missed so much, really have sacrificed to come here, then that's a win for me
@asya Yeah that impact is here too .. and everywhere. The racism, anti-vaxx bullshit has been just as damaging in Australia, and our data gets scraped. I don't think it's a specifically US problem.
I do hear you about trying to somehow stay connected, I've lost so many connections too. And I agree that the migration to the fediverse is not going to happen easily or quickly for lots of users.
Over the pandemic, I spent a great deal of time pushing back against anti-vax B.S. on social media. I was literally doing covid research at the time, so I know more than 98% of the public. But I ended up feeling like the kid with his finger in the dyke. "Who cares if you have an advanced degree in epidemiology, listen to this dude on YouTube." Jeebus Crispies.
@asya@tikistitch This. I know a few people who fought / are still fighting that fight and you all made a difference. Even if only small groups of people at a time. Thank you for putting your finger in the dyke!
I talk with my Dad about all of this often. He's 70 and an oldskool IT guy who has seen all the ebbs and flows. He always points out that it was ever thus, and all we can really do is make our little corner of the digital universe kind and inclusive .. so I'm doing that! 💜
@moonchildontheblueside It's looking like Threads will drop on Thursday, but without ActivityPub support to start off with .. so no actual drama here yet, but it looms. And likely our less savvy loved ones are all going to say 'cool .. lets use Threads' .. and when mine say that to me, my head is going to explode! 🤯 🙄

@bunnytown It sounds like they're not going to implement ActivityPub at launch .. but will arrive in the fediverse later. The general consensus from #FediArmy seems to be 'no thank you very much, meta' (and that's my feelings too) .. so we'll be blocking.
@bunnytown@pixelcats looks like I'm gonna have to give up FB and IG maybe. Or at least start a burner account on IG to stay with the tannies. I'm so tired of data harvesting.
@GQB@bunnytown Yeah I have some decisions to make too. I'm basically off Facey aside from some work for clients and a few relatives, but I have a whole Doggy Insta account that is a record of my Manneke's life from puppyhood. What to do about that has been in the back of my head for a while, but I suspect some sort of Pixelfed move is now in my very near future.
