@whitequark The Day the Earth Stood Still imagined an EMP-like effect one year before the first hydrogen test and I don’t think conceptions have become more nuanced at all in the interim.

(At least in that case it is explained away by within the capabilities of the alien visitors to target and disable electronics, not a realistic effect of an EMP)
