US lawyers are fighting for court reform on behalf of many mothers because what’s happening violates federal civil rights law: Family courts routinely deny women’s constitutional right to due process and some have lost their children because of it.
Many women, and family court reform advocates, call this an abuser’s modus operandi: They obtain an emergency protection order and often custody of children—then that “temporary” order becomes permanent.
