I have 2 and hate them both for different reasons. I have a desktop that I hate to sit at. I just realized I don't want a laptop. I want my desktop to be more powerful and I want the peripherals to be able to go to different rooms in my house. I'm thinking like an umbilical, lol.
Is this a thing? Or is it a fever dream sort of idea?

davep,

@ZeNeece something like a... network?

@davep lol, I know, I'm an idiot. I am really good at a lot of things, but for some reason, networks have always boggled my mind. I have never been able to make sense of them. What I really want is just one single supercomputer, since I do high end graphics. But I can't seem to figure out how to do what I want!

davep,

@ZeNeece Maybe get a more techie friend to spec out a new rig, possibly cannibalising bits from your current setup if up to the task.

@davep Yes, that's what I need! I've built my before, but not something that Frankensteins them together. I have been trying to come up with a way to do that. I don't have anyone techier than me available here unfortunately. But the Internets have not given me a good solution. I know I'm just missing something simple. I am not as smart as I wish I were.

davep,

@ZeNeece What do you need for your desktop? More and faster RAM? Beefier GPU and/or CPU? A more powerful power supply unit? Faster and bigger disks?

What are your bottlenecks?

And you mentioned peripherals. Such as?

@davep
I have 64 GB of RAM in my desktop, but I bet it's slow now.
My GPU is decent. But I would like better and faster. Or a second one maybe. Do they have to be identical to have 2 in there?
I have a decent power supply, I think. I need to check.
I have about 15-20 TB of hardrives, and my main is a solid state. My laptop's is bigger. My main is a too small, but ok for now.

davep,

@ZeNeece you can use different GPUs, no problem.

What exactly is causing you issues in your work?

BTW, you want SSDs and NVMe to replace older hard drives. It's by far the biggest performance gain.

@davep
I had this harebrained idea awhile ago that what I really wanted to do with the light laptop was find a way to use it as just a touchscreen and keyboard for the other laptop, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. But what I really want is for it to be that for the desktop instead.

Is it possible to remove an OS and just use the keyboard, monitor etc and all that and have it connect with no lag to a desktop computer?

davep,

@ZeNeece you could use a laptop to RDP into your beast of a desktop.

@davep
huh, you got me on that one, RDP? remote desktop .. um, pomegranate? remote deploy.. eesh. I feel so stupid, lol.
I was getting some lag and loss of quality when I was using my desktop computer through my laptop. But I probably used bad software to do it. My wifi in my house here is pretty good and I don't have any problems with it otherwise. But the lag and lack of quality was not cool.

davep,

@ZeNeece yeah, it's Remote Desktop Protocol. That way you do the hard work on the uber-desktop but can control it from your laptop.

@davep David, THANK YOU, that is so helpful! I know it's ages since we had that conversation, but I've been working my fingers to the bone and have only had time to mull this all over and see what I could find, but not check into Mastodon. (no rest for the wicked, I guess, lol)
I am going to go look up RDPs and see if I was thinking of something similar. I know the built in Microsoft one doesn't suffice, as it has a lag that is unusable. But maybe I can find something else!
Thank you Thank you!

davep,

@ZeNeece No problem! I'd totally forgotten about this too 🤪

davep,

@ZeNeece RDP shouldn't take up much bandwidth, latency is usually what screws it up. But that shouldn't be a problem on a local network unless something isn't working correctly.
