Watching and now CEO Huffman run the same play, it makes me think that Matt Muellenweg may be the only tech CEO left that I can think of has any credibility on the .

@b3n@g0v.social avatar

@tchambers The Ghost CEO is also amazing. Substack stole their whole (open source) code without accreditation and he basically said “look, I know you were going to steal from someone anyway, but if you take it from us who are already giving it for free, at least say thank you as we ask you for.”

tchambers,

@b3n Will check out Ghost - know there is an Activity Pub plug in….

@b3n @tchambers ghost.org?

@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@b3n @tchambers wait what? Substack is based on Ghost code?

tchambers,

@oblomov @b3n

Here is the last I heard: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33956300

gustav,
@gustav@jkpg.rocks avatar

@tchambers @oblomov @b3n so basically their theming system is compatible with Ghost themes and the Ghost founder took fact that one Substack site used a Ghost theme on their Substack as "Substack running on Ghost"

I like Ghost and I'm not a fan of Substack but lying doesn't really help here.

b3n,
@b3n@g0v.social avatar

@gustav @tchambers @oblomov

I was mostly referring to this:

„Ghost uses the MIT license, one of the most permissive OSS licenses there is. Essentially, anyone can do anything they want with our code, with ONE basic requirement: You must include copyright attribution.

Which they have not.“

There’s nothing about it in the HN comment.

gustav,
@gustav@jkpg.rocks avatar

@b3n @tchambers @oblomov but the whole thing is that Substack didn't use any of Ghosts code, the Free Press decided to use a third party Ghost theme that had Ghost's search feature with their Substack site.

The only one that can be blamed for anything here is the theme author that didn't include proper attribution.

b3n,
@b3n@g0v.social avatar

@gustav @tchambers @oblomov So TFP stole the code for their theme and O’Nolan confused it with substack? Ok, sorry, I’m that case I was wrong.

Sorry, I just read his thread, thought he should know - and also cared even less. (It also fit my assumptions to be honest, given that substack was moving fast and focusing on business dev before code for a long time - which is not bad, but… bad if they break too many things on the way.)

gustav,
@gustav@jkpg.rocks avatar

@b3n @tchambers @oblomov I haven't seen anyone else say that they stole the theme, I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they bought it here (https://aspirethemes.com/themes/tripoli)

In this whole scenario I think Substack is looking the best. The fact that they decided to make Ghost theming the standard is great, more compatability there is great for theme authors and it is good that it is based on an open source model (even though substacks server side is not)

b3n,
@b3n@g0v.social avatar

@gustav @tchambers @oblomov Substack and Ghost are fundamentally different in that you can host your own ghost instance but substack is always centralized. So the question is not whether they stole a theme but whether they used the full ghost package as a starting point for their full service. That was my initial assumption.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt? Sure. But I’m not a judge anyway and they lost my sympathy earlier already.

@tchambers Automattic was also ahead of the curve on remote work. They've been a fully remote, worldwide workforce for ages.

Alisnarkbar,

@tchambers well, Tom from MySpace, he was always the first friend one had when arriving lol.

tchambers,

@Alisnarkbar Tom does seem strong when graded on a curve….😀

burningbird,
@burningbird@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers I knew him WAY back when WordPress was just beginning. He was actually a decent person back then, too.

KraftTea,
@KraftTea@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers Huffman, not Hoffman.

Reid Hoffman, in particular, doesn't deserve to be associated with that jerk.

tchambers,

@KraftTea D'oh! Edited the original post. Thanks.

@tchambers I hope Matt Mullenweg keeps doing the right thing.

pgcd,
@pgcd@mastodon.online avatar

@tchambers I don't know him personally but I have it on good authority (a childhood friend and him are somewhat close) and they confirm Matt is actually a smart guy, as opposed to Elon & Mark.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@pgcd @tchambers I met Mark about 13 years ago, and I think he was smart and good, but I think the amount of money he and Musk have does something very damaging to one’s psyche. It disconnects one from reality.

pgcd,
@pgcd@mastodon.online avatar

@ramsey @tchambers I'm pretty sure you're right but, at least, when you're smart, you can imagine at least some of the consequences of your actions and (possibly) listen to people telling you when something's bad.
Which is why Automattic (led by a smart guy) is not currently a shithole while, for instance, Twitter (led by Elon) is.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@pgcd @tchambers Oh, I’m saying that the money makes you unrealistic. Mullenweg isn’t worth anything near what Zuckerberg and Musk are worth, so he’s still firmly planted in reality. 🙂

luca,

@tchambers I think he forgot that he promised on twitter to federate tumblr too

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@luca @tchambers my understanding is that he's wary of just joining because he expects a huge instance like Tumblr getting in at once would be problematic for the Fediverse (he gets it, and doesn't want to steamroll it like Meta is trying to do with P92).

Of course, there's a relatively simple solution to this, which is to have each blog join as a separate instance, but I don't know what his thoughts on this approach are.

tchambers,

@oblomov @luca

True: also it would be a major change to Tumblr I can see it being done carefully.

tchambers,

@oblomov @luca

They might do that - I believe that now is how it works at Wordpress.com sites using the ActivityPub plugin today.

tchambers,

@luca And they are making good efforts there.

blake,

@tchambers @luca I'm still curious how things would work, like usernames/domains, Tumblr's unique tags system, etc.

Would usernames be @blog? @user? let you pick? The latter would make more sense if multiple people could post to the same blog, or if you're using a custom domain for it. The former is a bit less personal but it makes more sense.
Would older posts automatically be searchable on federated remotes? Would they do opt-in, opt-out, or force it? How would community labels federate?

tchambers,

@blake @luca

Suspect look the ActivityPub plugin for signs of what's to come on Tumblr and what is her now for Wordpress sites and Wordpress.org service.

captaincalliope,

@blake @tchambers @luca maybe they should come hang with some of the activitypub developers community peeps. Anyone know how they can be invited?

blake,
captaincalliope,

@blake @tchambers @luca yes?I'm unsure if there's like a main one where all the activitypub infrastructure and app builders are yet what wuth the wc3 thing, matrix groups, etc. Hard to keep track and I don't pay close attention as much as lurk..

blake,

@captaincalliope @tchambers @luca I think that is the primary developer hangout place, although there might be a Discord Eugen runs that I don't know about.

captaincalliope,

@blake @tchambers @luca that doesn't sound like it would count. Lol. Don't invite the automattic people to that. 😂
