I really need to start tracking the kilometres I put on my running shoes. Had some knee troubles after recent runs and now with new shoes they’re gone.

I noticed HealthFit has a field to track shoes and you can set a default 👍

I guess I’ll know when the time comes and it’ll vary by vendor and model but how many kilometres do you keep your shoes for fellow runners?

@finestructure running the risk (pun intended) of sounding like broken record, minimalist shoes won't have the issue of foam wearing out (there is none). Xero shoes have a 5000 miles warranty on their soles.
And if you adapt correctly, you will reduce the risk of injury.

I know RunKeeper allows you to track mileage per shoe, with the option of managing multiple shoes, if you use that strategy.

Before switching to minimalist footwear, I switched every ~500km, like others mention.

@fo So do these shoes have no cushion at all? If so that’s definitely not going to work for me 🙂 I need shock absorbing.

@finestructure
On trails they last around 400-500 km, when I was on road it was closer to 300-400 km

@finestructure I run daily and have multiple pairs of shoes. Feels better for my body to switch it up. I have no idea how many km I run in each shoe, I often replace them when they start to get holes 😅

@chris Holes 😅 My knee objects to that strategy 🤣

@finestructure @chris so do my feet when it rains. Oddly, when I started doing higher mileage my knee problems went away completely? Not sure if there’s a cause and effect though.

@chris @finestructure did you change the route too for the longer runs? Maybe that played a role too... I instantly get pain from even short asphalt stretches

@finestructure Strava keeps track for me. Around 550 kilometers is when I start to feel some breakdown.

@MtnSunTrees Nice, good to know! 500km seems like a good number to look at based on other feedback and past observation 👍

@finestructure about 6 months after I started running I got an ache in my hip. Went away when I got new shoes after a friend suggested that could be the problem. The ones I replaced them with are still going strong, but I know if I get any aches/pains, I'll switch them out ASAP.
I think stratva can track this, but it never occurred to me that that might be why

finestructure,
@finestructure@mastodon.social avatar

@tmcfarlane Yeah, also bear in mind that when you change your training load your body will take months to adapt. It’s no joke if you run a lot more per month all of a sudden and your legs and feet haven’t had time to adapt.

finestructure,
@finestructure@mastodon.social avatar

@tmcfarlane The thing I want to avoid is changing only once I experience pain, because it’ll have knock on effects on other activities. Reactive sports like padel or badminton are more likely to lead to injury even if I’m careful (which, let’s be honest, is hard to do in the heat of the moment 😅) once the running has created a weakness.

@finestructure My uncle is an avid runner and has maintained spreadsheets for years in which he tracks how long he has run in his shoes. That way, he knows exactly when to replace them before it becomes an issue.

finestructure,
@finestructure@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Yeah, that’s really what I need to be doing, especially as I’m not the umm newest model and will feel the wear more than I used to 😅

@finestructure I run most days, but only short distances (5k or 7.5k). I don't race. I have Nike Vaporfly, (not for speed, but because they're the most cushioned for my footsies) and they are now on their 1677th kilometre. A bit worn underneath but still keep my feet dry. Never had an injury of any kind (except a scraped hand when I slipped on some gravel last year), but I think that's not so much to do with shoes but at 56kg and 160cm I don't have much physical weight to crunch my knees with.

finestructure,
@finestructure@mastodon.social avatar

@hastingsmothman Ah, weight is a good point. I weigh 80kg, that’s going to impact lifetime for sure. And I tend to run 10-12km, so I probably feel the shoe’s wear more towards the end of a run than I would if they were shorter runs.

hastingsmothman,
@hastingsmothman@mastodon.green avatar

@finestructure hopefully your new shoes will do the trick for your knees. I think the 500-800km replacement thing recommended by shoe vendors is partly (largely!) a marketing gimmick to coerce runners into boosting their commercial profits. I think a common sense approach that we each know, as individuals, when our shoes need replacing ... and it's probably not when the shoe vendors tell us so. 😅

finestructure,
@finestructure@mastodon.social avatar

@hastingsmothman I may have to try a new model because I’ve gone through 5 pairs, with less than a year on each. And I changed them because they felt worn out, not because of a recommendation. It’s only in hindsight now that I get a sense of what that means in terms of kilometres and it’s pretty much that range of 500-700 I think.

    @javierleiva Mmm, I’m pretty sure I wore out my last pair faster than that 😅 I need to double check but I’m pretty sure they were less than a year old and I ran 840km over the last 12 months. And they’re done for sure!

    They’re €100ish Asics, so it might be a case of having to spend a little more for higher quality.

    Thanks for the data point!
