Just some dude who likes running, programming, boardgames, D&D, snowboarding, kayaking exclusively in that order.
Former video game dev, now your regular platform engineer. I like to build things that build things. I am a father of 3, pain in my wife's ass, runner, programmer, possibly crazy guy living the dream.

Things have been hectic at home. Tonight was my first run in a week and just the second in two weeks. Both terrible outings. My legs were so dead I couldn’t continue. Super frustrated and down.

Running when it is easy is great and all but for me, when it is hard and you still get out, that's something to be proud of.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
I was in the foster system and while I was pretty young it definitely had an impact on me. The hand off to new families was weird and you never knew what you were going to get. I was very lucky to have my sister, the strongest person I know, so we pulled out of it

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
I live in E WA state from Long Beach CA
Pros:
Absolutely beautiful place. The mountains, lakes, trails are everywhere.

There is no state income tax.

Cons:
It's a blue state but Idaho is about 5 miles from me and this area is red like my neighbor. I see trump flags regularly and similar flags flying behind massive pickup trucks.

The closest city is Seattle 5 hours away. There are no pro sports I can go see. It's not the country but it has a lot less options than Long Beach CA

I was going to say she must have a different training plan than I do but thinking about it, I think this is accurate.

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL
I had a saying that I found as I was training for my first marathon. "A runner is someone who tries to talk themselves out of running while they get ready to run"
I remember by the time I got to my porch putting on my running shoes I would concede that maybe I might just run around the block. Every time I would end up running the planned run or more.

I've heard of this technology. This is a basket to put laundry in? I will do some research.
@MikeH

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL
Honestly I don't have an issue doing laundry. It feels like quite the accomplishment for like 5 minutes loading and switching and 10-15 minutes folding and putting away. Way better than cooking or cleaning the kitchen.

With coming up, I'm contemplating a Star Wars rewatch. I'm curious what order you consider is the ideal order to be watching them in.

I like the Machete order that starts with Rogue One, IV, V, I, II, III, VII, VII, IX.
My favorite part is going from Rogue One to Star Wars

Started strong, got through the first half in just about 2:15 but I had a 1 km detour to a bathroom and some careful strides leading up to it.
All in all pretty happy with it even though it slipped away from me at the end.

"A desire for a loud car with a modified muffler is predicted by being a man and higher scores on psychopathy and sadism," was published last year. "We found that it was sadism and psychopathy was predicting who wants to modify their mufflers, who feels more connected to their vehicle, and they think loud cars are really cool".

I have a heavily modified Subaru that has an aftermarket muffler among other modifications. It is not for the sound, although it is quite loud, it is for the extra power. That said I would never leave the house in the morning or come home late.

If you could have one new skill starting right now, what would it be?

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
I wanna be able to do something with my mind only observing and not reacting.

Something, probably athletic, that is better with flow. A better snowboarder, skateboarding, parkour possibly.

Something weird happened at my last Ultra. It was a 50k where I spent the first part taking my time enjoying running with friends and the second half I was alone. In total I was out 10 hours which I have done before. When I was coming in about 5 km to go just after a brutal climb up some switchbacks and I started to feel tired.

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

A running friend came back down the trail to see if they could find me and make sure I was ok. Talking to them I said I felt pretty good and I did and said, I can do a leg check. To my surprise not only was I ok, My feet had dexterity and power I did not know was there. I felt like a kid again running up and down the final hills going under a 5 min/km pace zooming up and down the hills.
I have always heard that there is a mental component but I never really understood it until then.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
Wow, I have been thinking about what I would respond with and I'm like holy shit.

Poor kid moved all around up to the 10th grade. My high school's highest grade when I got there was 10th, new school. My class were the seniors at the school for 3 years. My father died when I was 17 so I was the adult from then. I was smart, at least in math. I had charisma but was a class clown of sorts to cover my awkward, I missed social cues. I was a kind of a pity case so people were nice to me
