Americans, by and large, have stopped trusting science. One chemist thinks he has identified a big part of the problem — scientists. Christopher Reddy says the scientific community is failing to help Americans understand science, particularly environmental disasters and medical emergencies. The Guardian has more.

@ScienceDesk Every couple years, someone has to trot out the "people don't believe scientists because scientists" thing. It's so fucking tiring. https://smallpondscience.com/2020/01/18/the-deficit-model-of-science-communication/
People believe what they believe mostly because it makes them feel good or it allows them to tell themselves a story about how the world makes sense. They mostly don't care if it's true. Scientists are the ones who care what's true. Scientists should do science and communicators should do communication.

@ScienceDesk ⬆️

So now @TheGuardian is #BothSidesing #disinformation ?

Nonsense!

But there IS always room for improving #SciComm , because “Only YOU can prevent #TruthDecay !” 👉 https://cen.acs.org/acs-news/comment/ACS-Comment-prevent-truth-decay/100/i16

@ScienceDesk “certainty” in a world full of unknowns - that isn’t a failure of science, it’s the direct result of RW politicians undermining public education to such an extent that there’s a broadly held idea that there are simple, pat answers to complex problems. Maybe the problem isn’t science, it’s a public that has walked away from doing hard work.

ClaraListensprechen,

@ScienceDesk
The problem also lies in how science is funded. Case in point: "monarch science" Andy Davis, posterboy.

@ScienceDesk Here's the Guardian promoting unscientific propaganda. Thanks, Guardian! Give us your comms advice!
