"Fewer U.S. scientists are pursuing postdoc positions, new data show" 📉

"The trend underscores concerns that the academic community is facing a postdoc shortage and that early-career scientists are increasingly favoring higher paid positions outside academia."

“It’s not a situation that’s good for the country.”

citc,

It is good to laugh.
Germany higher education is financed by taxes; everybody understands taxation sources are private industry. Noone in the world believes the nonsense that USA is best; the country is a hypocrite. How many native Americans or descendants of enslaved Africans derived any benefit from the rose-tinted "MAGA" days of Reagan (another discredited president)?

Universities need a non commercial revenue stream, so do academics. Admins need to be made employees of academics&students.

A call from the privileged, for the poor to pay more taxes in the hope that "all will benefit" (apparently "trickle down <strike>economics</strike> dismall science). The privileged also need slave labour to expedite menial tasks, so that "high order thought" may occur will minimal disturbance.

@erinnacland @academicchatter @klangin Hurray, my timing seems about right to go private with my consulting business, offering academic services on my terms (not the crappy terms of short-term post-doc contract).

    citc,

Labour shortages are a dubious myth; paymasters are in complaint at the prospect of paying more money.

@erinnacland @academicchatter @klangin folks, take note. I wonder whether something similar is happening in Europe.

@IanSudbery @moritz_negwer @erinnacland @academicchatter @klangin it feels like the UK and US have fundamentally shrank or stopped funding for public goods

Interestingly, in the US PD salaries have risen faster than inflation and kept pace with average salary since I was a postdoc there (NIH starting salary is $58k today, or 12% more than national median. In 2011 it was $38.5k, $46k in todays dollars, or 13% more than national median).

This is not true of the UK, where postdoc salaries are now £37k, but would be £45k if they had kept pace with inflation or median salary.

@moritz_negwer @erinnacland @academicchatter @klangin Having been on the hiring end the past year, yes it is. Certainly a downturn in turnout for positions.
