Favorite Spaceships

What are your favorite spaceships from science fiction shows, movies, games, comics, anime or anything?

The Swordfish from Cowboy Bebop is probably my top favorite. I like the idea of small compact ships meant for a single person and going fast.

For that same reason I love the Razorback from The Expanse. Except the engine to ship ratio in this universe probably makes more sense realistically. The cockpit 360 swivel system is also really clever.

The Outlaw Star from… Outlaw Star is not a small ship. I just like it because it looks cool despite its goofy unrealistic grapple arms that hold weapons.

Huge fan of the Rocinante from The Expanse.

USS Voyager, NCC-74656 will always be top of my list. Seeing her in S3 of Picard made me even happier than seeing the Enterprise D (though hearing Majel Barrett as the computer again was another favourite moment).

The SSV Normandy from Mass Effect (either the SR1 or the SR2 — they're both beautiful galaxy-saving vessels).

The Ebon Hawk from Knights of the Old Republic, even if it is an unoriginal design for the franchise.

The TARDIS from Doctor Who.

Moya from Farscape. Creepy, organic, but strangely lived in. Also very temperamental.

Saltycreams,

Gotta be spike’s ship from cowboy bebop. Instantly recognizable silhouette. Gorgeous design.

I've always been fond of the (seemingly) abandoned generation ship Thistledown from Greg Bear's Eon.

LeZero,

I really like the ship designs of Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Especially the flagship Brünhild

cyanarchy,

From Halo, my favorite ship is probably the Heart of Midlothian, followed by the Spirit of Fire. There’s something I like about the slabbed, angular bow.

From Mass Effect, the Tempest, bar none the most attractive ship I think I’ve ever laid eyes on. I think she looks better when you can walk around her, it’s hard to get a good angle on.

And an odd one out, the Taiidan Destroyers from Homeworld are particularly badass, even if their gun layout is objectively hot garbage. Could say the same about most Taiidan ships, they look less functional and more like the product of an unchallenged imperial navy. Kushan vessels feel comfortably realistic but aren’t visually distinct.

Excelsior class from Star Trek. Something about it just screams peak federation design.

The Destiny from Stargate: Universe. The ship itself was physically a beaut, but the thing I really loved about it was the strange combined sense of grandeur and humility. It was one of the greatest accomplishments of the Ancients, built to probe the ultimate mystery of the universe and possibly touch the face of whatever truly passed for God in that setting, and it had crossed inconceivably vast distances over an incredible period of time to do it. But it was doing so in a quiet manner. No great fanfare, no "My Name is Ozymandias" statue-legs, just a ship running on autopilot taking regular scans and leaving a string of breadcrumbs available to anyone who wanted to follow it. The ultimate road from the Builders of Roads, without a single signpost declaring who they were or why they were doing it.

In a way, the premature ending of the series felt strangely poetic. The Ancients set Destiny and its mission in motion, but were unable to see it through to its ultimate conclusion. The Ancients' chosen successors, the Tau'ri, picked up the baton for a while. They tidied up the Destiny, fixed some of its worst problems, had just enough of a glimpse of what it had learned to know what it might be seeking. But then they, too, finished their tasks and went to sleep without claiming any great prize.

deadcream,

but were unable to see it through to its ultimate conclusion

More like they didn't care anymore. I'm sure they got all the answers after they ascended.

The Normandy SR2 from Mass Effect.

The Defiant, Sovereign, and Akira classes from Star Trek.

The Pegasus from Battlestar Galactica.

Yes, I have a type. Big gun beauties who stomp into a fight not giving AF are my thing.

Xariphon,

To me the most beautiful ship I've ever seen is the Baudo Star Yacht from Star Wars. Now, there's two very different kinds of ship called this, and the one I mean is the sleek, smooth one that's all curves and huge engines, not the blockier version.

Xariphon,

Yes! That's the one.

maybeamonster,

Hm. When I clicked "Add comment" I was redirected to the log in page and now my post seems to not exist. Aplogies if I'm duplicating a stupidly long post...

For your taste those a cool ships, OP. But me? I want a Space RV!

Possibilities:

Liberator (Blake's 7)
Fewer than 10 crew "needed". Advanced AI & automation with self-repair. A level of tech at least one full generation than the other characters - It's faster than anyone, mostly better armed and shielded, AND it has a teleporter that no one else does.

It's not capable of atmospheric travel or landing. You're going to use that teleporter a lot.

"the Consul's ship" (Hyperion Cantos)
Though the automation/AI/self-repair is similar, it's not as in-universe advanced as Liberator but this ship might be the most RV like of the bunch. One owner's berth and one additional private cabin are all there is, surely the other living spaces can have a hide a bed or such. It comes with a balcony and other tricks, too.

This one doesn't come with guns or shields. If you are worried about pirates or dystopian empires attacking you, you're options are limited. I don't play piano, so the bolted-in grand Steinway won't be used as it deserves.

Moya (Farscape)
Biggest of the bunch, it boasts a hangar bay, multiple levels, and a seemingly endless number of rooms and nooks & crannies. It's alive and has mini repair robots for healing/selfrepair. It's physically bonded to a living "pilot" for controls and communcation with crew. It can enter a planet's atmosphere but the only displayed "landing" was hiding underwater.

So, no spaceport visits and it's very tempramental, as mentioned by another poster. It's a living being, it has an opinion on what you are doing and where you are going. Sometimes and upside, but it's a consideration.

Serenity (Firefly)
It's tempramental too. But not due to a will, organic or AI. Instead it's age and abuse. Good size for a small crew and all shown accomodations look comfortable. Not only can this one land it also has a couple dinghy/shuttles for short hops from orbit or the landing site.

It's not going anywhere beyone one star system, though. If it's not a system with a bunch places to go as seen in the show, then your on-shore holiday options are limited. Did I mention it's old and breaks a lot?

Rocinante (The Expanse)
I've not read the source material, so the book version may have features or drawbacks I don't know about.

As much as the Consul's ship is not-armed compared to Liberator, this one is ARMED. The interior space and accomodations feel similar to Serenty's, so plenty of room for a small group. It's another single star system traveller. Atmosphere/landing friendly is great when you have habitable destinations, though.

As an RV, this feels more like trying to tour the U.S. in an armoured infantry vehicle. A lot of places won't be thrilled that you are there.
