I don’t know if it’s affecting other instances, but all images from startrek.website are denying referrals to image links from lemmy.sdf.org. In other words, all image posts show up as broken unless I open them in a new tab and refresh so the referrer becomes startrek.website. It’s not affecting any of my other subbed instances, and when I open startrek.website it works fine, so I suppose something’s breaking in the in-between?

It’s a ublock/easylist issue. It seems to be blanket blocking xhr requests to certain TLDs including .website

Add this to your filters as a workaround for now (replace lemm.ee with your instance)

OH, yes. vger.app is a web app (aka forntend), not a theme. It’s also not “Voyager” (the show) themed per-se, I believe it’s based off of the old Reddit app Apollo.

I’d love to see a community dedicated to sharing fan work, like cosplay, fanfiction or fanart. Right now, quark’s seems too off topic for that, DI and Risa are obviously not the right place, and the main Trek community seems to be focused on serious discussion about the shows.

Right now, content like that is welcome in c/startrek - it’s a pretty big tent.

That’s not to say we’d never set up a dedicated community for something like that, but we’d want to be sure that’s the way to go.

I realize I'm kind of a PITA with my idiosyncrasies, but I'd like you to consider a way of taking 'one and done' donations. I tend to avoid recurring automated subscriptions.

There might be others like me, and you could pickup a couple dollars here and there from one-offs.

I don't have a lemmy acct anywhere at this point, but I like what you're doing, and I spend time here, so I'd like to support you without making a commitment.

Hi, this might be a silly question - no strike that, it’s definitely a silly question but one I can’t figure out: is there any way to change the default sort order of comments from “Hot”? Because I’m old, I’m used to a chrono ascending view and it would be nice not having to remember to change it every time I enter a new thread.

We’re aware of the pact and will cross that bridge when (or if) it ever really happens. We’re certainly no fans of Meta (or Reddit,or Twitter). So far it seems more likely to affect Mastodon than Lemmy/Kbin.

The “user data” (comments, posts, votes, etc) that would be available to a hypothetical instance owned my Meta is already public for anyone, so not much we have control over there. “Defederating” essentially just means “blanket banning” a bunch of users at once.

Agreed that it’s public now - in the case of up/downvoting publication is instance-dependent — and can be scraped, but as a federated instance Meta can just load it directly.

@StillPaisleyCat Federating only happens through user interactions unless you have agreements between instance hosts IIRC. Not there wouldn’t possibly be a huge amount of Threads users following Mastodon accounts which would then push the Mastodon user’s profile/posts into a federated or “global” feed in Threads. Federation in itself isn’t an all you can eat pass to Fediverse data. Defederation would stop the above example of data sharing though.

@StillPaisleyCat TBH with Threads only having an algorithmic feed I have serious doubts they’ll ever be able to truly “Federate” in any meaningful way beyond being able to tick a checkbox for ActivityPub integration. They aren’t going to want me using a Mastodon client to be able to read their chronological feed and not be served ads.

True, but if Meta (or anyone) wanted to “directly” get that data, it would be as trivial as setting up an instance on something as small as a Raspberry Pi and subscribing to a community here. We would have no way of knowing who it is or stopping them. Defederation is a tool to prevent brigading, not lurking.

If (if) Meta wanted to set a lemmy-style platform, preemptively defederating from it would be a largely symbolic gesture. Doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing, like I said we’ll cross that bridge if and when it becomes relevant.

How do I load an avatar for myself? I've gone to Settings --> Avatar, clicked Upload Avatar and selected an image I saved. But then I get the error message, "SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data." I don't know what that means. I'm guessing that I'm violating the parameters of naming an image, and/or maybe the image's size or type? The image I was going to use is a .jpg. My only Fediverse account is this one, on startrek.website.

We haven't been able to replicate this. Have tried this recently? Or is it an error from a few weeks ago? I ask because we had a brief issue that gave a similar error but has since been fixed.

I've been unable to replicate this so far, even with a filenames containing unusual characters. Have you tried multiple pictures?

I tried today, just before posting my comment. I tried changing the name of the image, at first the name had spaces and capital letters. I renamed the image without using caps or spaces, but it still didn't work. Below is a screenshot of the error message I got. I'll try using a different image.

RE: My not being able to upload an image for my avatar. It's not you, it's me. Specifically, it was my browser. I first tried using Firefox, which is the browser I've always used since signing up for startrek.website. Even though I thought I had fully allowed startrek.website on Firefox, I wondered if there was something under Firefox's hood that was the problem. What I love about Firefox can at times be problematic, what with the blocking of this, that, or the other.

So, I just tried again to add an avatar, this time using Chrome. I seldom use Chrome because it is a lot more loosey-goosey than Firefox about giving websites permissions. I was able to give myself an avatar when using Chrome to access startrek.website. I can see my avatar, and everyone else's on Firefox and Chrome. The why of the situation is far beyond my skill set to explain. I'm going with "it worked."

Is this instance currently taking new registrations? It might be good to get a PSA out…

I understand you’re running 17.4 so captcha can be used. My understanding was this was done because new signups are being allowed.

When I look at various aggregators of Lemmy instance information however, w keep seeing that startrek.website is closed to signup.

Take for example the information available through Lemmy - Fediverse Network Statistics posted on fedidb.org.

As there are a significant number of unhappy redditors just now who might wish to join Lemmy but are discouraged, it would be good to confirm.

I really appreciate the simple pathway that was offered for users on r/startrek back before the subs went dark June 12th. It was a successful migration for me mostly, but I understand that there’s a largish crowd of frustrated folks who haven’t made it through.

Registrations are technically restricted to be by application only, but the bar for a successful application is incredibly low.

Unfortunately, open registration led to a flood of bot accounts across the entire Lemmy network, so that's not a viable option.

There was a new wave of frustrated folks looking for help on r/lemmy yesterday, mostly for lemmy.world which sounds like it was overwhelmed again, but not only that instance.

I can drop this suggestion when I see a new complaint in the megathead.

I’m mainly just on Reddit to help some of my longtime chat buddies ale the migration.

One issue I seem to run into quite a bit now is that if I try to access a community from another instance from this account I get 404 errors as example if I try to go to: https://startrek.website/c/pcmasterrace@lemmy.world

I'm wondering If this is intended behaviour or something I might have done wrong?

I think that happens when a community hasn't fully federated with us yet. It might tags a few days, especially with the heavier-than-usual traffic across the platform.
