I remember when strike through with LJ happened as I'm very sure @anildash does as well.

Because Livejournals code was open we had several network splits.

We had LJ, insane journal, journalfen and Dreamwidth.

Open ID even meant we could post comments on these communities and people's journals.

I have a feeling that there's a lot of former LJ folks on here, who were in fandom.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@onepict @anildash absolutely, the communities were so key to LJ's success at the time (and I maintain to this day, they screwed up by not adding events functionality and this is an area I'm actively watching Fedi for a genuine FB killer, and nothing quite works as needed yet...)

I have watched the process of with interest too, while I was never a big Reddit user, the sense of community there is a little similar to LJ back in the day, and I follow one Rexxit community ( on aussie.zone) through my Mastodon account and occasionally contribute even though the functionality split of Fedi means it doesn't quite work 100%. Not sure if this is something that can actually be achieved with different features across Fedi, but my gut tells me we'll have something more functional take the place of Mastodon as a leader in this space (I just hope it isn't Threads 😑), something with both communities and events, but nothing I've tested makes the grade, though there are some contenders.

@useless_modern_god yup... I used to be very active on Reddit between 2017-2019, experimented briefly with Mastodon in 2018, but moved here pretty permanently when Space Karen bought Twitter last year. it's been fascinating watching the new waves each time he does a new idiotic thing, and the wave was even more exciting as it brought a different crowd and boosted the , which is really good for the Fediverse ecosystem. I'm now experimenting with but am not sold yet, though the UI is very slick.

I feel completely locked out of this meta debate, being just a mere user rather than an instance admin.

Why can't users just decide themselves whether to block Facebook?

I get that it's their (the admins) platform, but it's our content.

Or is the whole point of being decentralised that you have to align with regional power?

I'm on Masto because of . I don't do FB/insta. Or twitter. But I've been in the Google/MS ecosystem for years mostly because the alternative is work. That's what metafedi will count on.

I'm personally just tired of stuff I use all the time getting switched off.

Judging by the amount of Apollo merch that’s sold in the last two weeks without me even mentioning it, maybe I should be in the t-shirt biz instead of apps

So, if you want to pick some up, there’s a bunch of stuff available at https://cottonbureau.com/people/apollo

corysell,

@christianselig would you consider a few designs that doesn’t include a snoo so front and center? There’s a few alternatives, so that’s good, but I’d love a type design.

Will definitely support whatever you decide to do, Apollo was one of the apps that made me try an iPhone for the first time and believe I could truly make the switch!

kudrakarma, to melbourne in Daily Thread: It's Thor's Day! 22/06/2023

I was an occasional fanatical Redditor but mostly lurker these days, but am a very active Fedi user, and have watched the with interest.

What was it even for? Hopefully to wake some people up: this is just going to keep happening in any online space that is owned by a company expecting to make a profit from the free labour of its users. It feels really shitty to watch people retreat and succumb, go back to the familiar, to those places and people you know. The powerful people pulling the strings are actually betting on that being the majority.

It's been handled more obviously or more stealthily in different spaces, but it is inevitable, and while the Fediverse is clunky and doesn't have the same resources as profit driven entities, it grows in spurts and won't suffer the same fate, even with the arrival of bigger entities, once it is clear enough people have woken up and won't give their social graph and intellectual and emotional labour to them for free anymore).

Email, while "captured" in many ways early on by Hotmail, then later Gmail, continues to function and new players continue to arrive (eg ProtonMail) because the protocols remain open to all.

Leaving walled gardens like Reddit and Twitter and returning to the open, interconnected Internet is the only sustainable path in the long term.

I hope many of you stay =)

Well, I'm not convinced that the C-suite at Snoo Inc aren't also co-signing this, but Hufflepuff McSpeztron certainly wants to play the big baddie, so the big baddie he shall be.

I wish all remaining redditors luck on making this very painful for him.

Welp, just overwrote and deleted a 13- and 11-year account. Many of us put up with the decline in the site because we were able to use 3rd party apps. For me Sync was reddit, and without it there's no way I'll access the site. I don't use my laptop for social media scrolling, and I will not use their intentionally horrible app.

Even if that weren't enough, the declining standards, the admin team, the whole of the site... it's clear there's no coming back and Reddit is now in the pile with Digg and Twitter.

Here's to my new home on . With this, I'm pretty much entirely in the for my social media needs.

oh nice, this already kinda describes what i want to have, by replacing all posts with gibberish.

But i think it would be funnier if a script could take each comment as gpt input and bloat it up to maximum comment length (would that considerably increase server space?).

Or it could just have several iterations of translating the comments into random languages and dialects until the original comment info is also gibberish. Gotta go with the times you see

OC Some ramblings about the future

Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....

kbin.social is struggling under the load today, just like mastodon.social does every few months when musksite does some other stupid thing. Give it time, many former reddit communities are already establishing themselves in the new "threadiverse".

I managed to create an account, @ivanvector, but federation doesn't seem to be working all that well right now.
