#TIL that a "notary public" in the UK (at least) can only notarise documents for use aboard ... they can't notarise docs for one to use in the UK. If, for instance, you want to make a certified copy of a document then you have to use someone else's services, such as a solicitor. (A notary can /also/ be a solicitor, of course).
