A that most Chinese folks around the world would know would be Journey to the West (1986).

My dad would tape every episode into VHS and us kids would replay the drama over and over again. It was a sad day when the VHS tapes ended up having mold growing in them, rendering them unwatchable.

Journey to the West is a “shen mo” - a Chinese fantasy genre that revolves around Chinese mythological characters.

@liztai this is not the version I grew up watching. Instead, the one I know is the 1996 HK version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West_(1996_TV_series)

What I remember most from the Journey to the West drama is watching it with my parents and siblings, and also being really annoyed with the monk because he needed rescuing all. the. damn. time.

(The demons coveted his flesh because it grants them immortality or something like that. Yay, dramas about cannibalism is my childhood too!)

But I also enjoyed the Monkey King’s redemption journey, though I secretly want to be as naughty as he was!

@liztai And then there’s these two demons who displayed the value of filial piety by wanting to give Tripitaka’s flesh to their demon parents instead of having it for themselves. Totally rooting for them

@liztai When we first went travelling with both our kids, our eldest (then 5yo) liked to roleplay Journey to West characters. In her mind, her younger brother (then 2yo) was Tang Seng, because he'd constantly create problems of some kind and we'd have to interrupt everything to take care of him.

chungliwen,

@liztai I loved the magic stick.

@chungliwen I should be more like you 😂 I am so noisy here lol

chungliwen,

@liztai Nah, it's nice to have noisy people, then I can stay silent.

Also I can't really RT with quote on Mastodon I think, that's also why I'm so silent.

@chungliwen yea it's a thing here, rt. People get heated up about it lol. I wasn't a big fan of RT but now I am like oklah, can do it for some stuff.

chungliwen,

@liztai No idea how to do it. I'll research when I have some time.

@liztai I've heard of the novel of Journey to the West, and I've wanted to read it. I never heard of the 1986 tv series. I just found it and watched a few minutes. I can totally see how a kid in 80's/early 90's would love it.
