“The reasons why use of the placeholder attribute as the only means of providing a user readable prompt for a form control is deficient UX, are voluminous. It is frustrating having to rehash this discussion endlessly.”

A better name for the attribute - hint would be my suggestion - might have improved developer behaviour.

Sadly though, probably not.

@iamdavidobrien @SteveFaulkner In retrospect we can consider that there might have been a better name, but "placeholder" doesn't imply "label" - this is because devs (my past self included) are used to seeing the visual effect and deciding how that can be used, considering only their personal and subjective norm in those decisions.

If we instead make verifying intended use a first practice, we would have fewer issues, but that's a big change to how devs learn.

@swiftone @iamdavidobrien why are you bikeshedding the name? It’s about how it’s implemented in browsers and defined in the HTML spec
