The implementation of the protocol is total crap (at least for free blogs).

I am giving up on that for longer texts.

Back to posting threads and putting a link to for the full text.

Besides that, 's User Interface is terrible. It's far from intuitive and always tries to sell you stuff (I'm not against paid services at all, but for a simple blog, always getting paid plans shoved into one's face is more than annoying).

At least, they convinced me of one thing: If I ever want to set up a professional website, it definitely won't be a WordPress site. Either I would just get a domain and code myself or install one of the many CMS around.

@mina same for me... struggeled a long time with WordPress. It's far more than a simple blog system these days. I personally switched to for a simple blog. I've wrote my experiece here if you are interested (DE): https://magicmarcy.de/bludit-ein-res%C3%BCmee

My semi-mandatory bi-weekly plug for

You can save tiddlywiki (TW) to your github account, and then use github pages to publish to the world.

You can configure TW to look however you want, if you're good with CSS. Though I'm old-school enough to like it the way it is.

Here‘s what I put together after I connected my blog to the Fediverse: https://sylkeweb.com/2023/10/15/wordpress-and-the-fediverse/

gpollara,
@gpollara@med-mastodon.com avatar

@mina why, what's wrong with it? Curious

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@gpollara

I set it up to publish my WordPress blog entries on my feed. What happens is that it just publishes a teaser text with a link to the WordPress article.

For that, I don't need no integration. I can just write (or copy and paste) a small text myself and add the link.

On the other hand: Supposedly, the WordPress blog acts as a Fediverse instance, which is kind of true: I can follow it from Mastodon, but with no consequence: the posts still don't appear in my feed.

gpollara,
@gpollara@med-mastodon.com avatar

@mina oh - i thought it was meant to publish the whole blog. In a way though, this may be a good solution, in order to drive traffic back to your website. But you're right, because at that point, you won't get federated replies in mastodon and others, because readers will still neeed to go to your blog to read the whole content. Hmmm...

manyoyo,

@mina @gpollara

No options at all, in the plugin settings?

This is what I see

manyoyo,

@mina Ah, sorry, just read back up thread and maybe the settings are different for Wordpress-hosted blogs?

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@manyoyo

Exactly!

No plugins for free blogs!

I am not going to get a paid plan for half a dozen visitors per month.

I rather pay my Mastodon instance a few € per year, instead of subsidizing a huge company which doesn't care to offer a good entry level service.

If the "free" service is that bad, I'm sure, they will try to squeeze me for even more "additional services", when I start paying.

Just experience talking.

sylkeweb,

@mina @gpollara
My blog was a free one at first and it posted its whole post as itself to the Fediverse, that should happen after you enable the access to the Fediverse in the Discussion settings. I followed my blog from all my many different Fediverse accounts and saw what happened. It will never post the whole article to your Mastodon account, unless you follow it (that way you can boost it). However for engaging with your personal Mastodon followers you are much better off using the teaser feature in the Marketing section - as you can only have a proper two way comments discussion staying away from the blog. All comments to the blog will appear on your actual blog post and any answer there won’t make it out to the commenter (which is crap).
Sometimes these blogs run into hiccups and your personal account doesn’t get served the new posts any more, happened to me on c.im. I had to un- and refollow for it to start receiving posts again. All my other accounts were still receiving them. It‘s definitely not perfect yet, but it works for both free and paid WordPress accounts.

@gpollara@med-mastodon.com avatar

@sylkeweb @mina side comment that you're right - replies to comments not going back to commenter is definitely suboptimal! As long as this integration is still being worked on and look to be improved, I can live with it for now.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@sylkeweb

I don't know, how you managed to get it to work.

I think, I ticked the right box (hard enough to find it - 1st pic)

and yet, nothing appears on the Fediverse side of my blog, I am following. (2nd pic)

@gpollara

sylkeweb,

@mina @gpollara And you will have to create a new post and publish it for testing purposes.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@sylkeweb

I think, I now know, what I did wrong - I only added this Mastodon account for automatic publishing (where you get the teaser text and the link), but not the @minasthoughtsandramblings@minasthoughtsandramblings.wordpress.com (the wordpress Fediverse account).

I will do that now.

However, the Wordpress account was never meant to be a standalone blog in its own right, just a place to write longer texts with more pictures for Mastodon.

@sylkeweb

BTW: You as an expert: On Friendica, can I put images and videos inside a post at a certain place? And format my text?

This is nice on Tumblr, you have the full freedom, but it has no Fediverse integration.

@gpollara

sylkeweb,

@mina @gpollara
I tested that for you before, the answer was yes - but you will only see it displayed like that on Friendica and other services that support that kind of feature. Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Firefish don’t. They will automatically display the images at their default position, top or bottom of the post.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@sylkeweb

Yes, now I remember you already told me. 🤦‍♀️ Sorry for asking again.

Perhaps, this changes when Mastodon starts to support MarkDown (it is in the development pipeline).

@mina @sylkeweb late to all this, but wanted to say thank you to both - i'm starting up a work webiste & blog, and several handy hints about what you can & can't be achieved with current Wordpress fedivers integrations.
