I'm going mad. Is there a simple solution to creating a small e-commerce website? With you're paying for multiple premium plugins and it's just bonkers. It's like being caught in a web.

Haven't looked at or really. Ideas?

Edit: it's the multilingual stuff that is making it a headache.

@davep just my 2 CTS but of you want WordPress+ecommerce+multilingual you should consider investing in Polylang. It's honestly the most reliable, stable and well coded solution for multilingual wp sites. If your site is not very complex or does not evolve really fast you can run it for several years without needing to update if you need to cut cost

@davep

SquareSpace maybe? 🙂🤷‍♂️

Also WordPress sites are a magnet for every wannabe hacker on the planet.

Just picture that scene in Blazing Saddles where Hedley Lamarr lists all the folks he wants to scare the townsfolk in Rock ridge. That's who will be constantly testing the site security 🫤

Unless you have some very good security options then you'll be fire-fighting one issue after the other.

aloppnow,

@davep Shopify works as a pretty solid base but it also has a paid plugin ( they call it apps ) eco system if you want to do something outside the box.

davep,

@aloppnow
It's not cheap at $36/month for the basic option either (which I think is the first tier to allow multiple languages). But it looks better integrated for stocks than the WordPress WooCommerce additional plugins.

aloppnow,

@davep $36 that includes nice hosting ( so far never had a downtime with Shopify) and payment processing (with some fees). It's a solid platforms. I have no experience in multilingual stores 🙂

davep,

@aloppnow Thanks. I think the basic multilingual stuff is included (3 languages?) at that tier, which would cover most of the market. And it's integrated, unlike the WordPress mess.

davep,

@aloppnow

Dayumn, you need the $299/month plan to sell abroad (or outside the EU, which specifically means England in our case)...

@davep you only need WP and one plugin woocommerce both are free

@davep a payment plug in. Which most are free...

I've built many WP e commerce sites. So far only one has a single paid plug in. And that's due to the bank taking the money.

davep,

@Extelec WooCommerce needs another plugin, for example...

It's not very joined up for a small e-commerce website.

@davep how many small organisations have multiple sites?

That's trying to solve a different problem.

davep,

@Extelec It's just the way they implement multilingual stores. Yuck.

@davep the only one I've ever done ans it was only a couple of languages, had a simple plug in that swapped the text in the page, a long time ago though.

davep,

@Extelec with WooCommerce? 👀

Extelec,
@Extelec@mstdn.social avatar

@davep yes, each product is still a page... you have a function to replace the txt when the page loads.

I doubt it's still practical to do it that way. This was when it was still pretty simple.

@davep I'd need to hunt for the multilingual stuff, but your original post didn't mention that as a requirement.

davep,

@Extelec oops, thanks. Updated.

It's the biggest pain. I've got WordPress, Elementor and Woo installed on a Raspberry Pi but it's going to get messy with the multilingual stuff.

@davep @Extelec Let's face it: multilingualism isn't the brightest side of . Not yet anyway, since it's on the roadmap and hopefully things will change within 2025 https://wordpress.org/about/roadmap/
Otherwise, I don't have much experience with stores, but the multisite approach suggested by the Woo article you linked is an overkill solution in my opinion and of course creates sync issues, etc.

@davep @Extelec There was WP Multilang https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-multilang/ which is totally free, still works very well but unfortunately doesn't seem to be maintained anymore. It might still be worth a try. Alternatively, Bogo https://wordpress.org/plugins/bogo/ could be an option. Finally, the big names like Polylang, WPML, etc. also work of course. Take a look at https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/wordpress/multilingual/ to choose the approach that suits you best, until multilingualism is implemented in WP core.

davep,

@cyberia @Extelec
I saw there were stock sync issues with the likes of WPML etc across different languages. I'm not sure it'll be a huge problem as we won't be selling hundreds per day (and if we do, we could afford something more bespoke!).
