itsonlygeorge,

Why don’t we go after the largest polluter, which is industry and corporations?

Oh, we can’t do that because they pay for politicians reelection campaigns.

Okay then, let’s just destroy the environment for a few more decades.

Greyghoster,

Most of everyone else would agree that it is a lack of political will.

Alsephina,

The scientific name is “capitalism”

Not tonight dear, I’m lacking political will.

Drusas,

"Lack of political will" = "lobbyist money is more enticing"

Should be 100%. After the 70s oil embargo we should have had ungodly research into nuclear, fusion, solar, and batteries. Good time to build more metros instead of asking more car lanes. We could have also kicked coal in the 80s. That’s 40 to 50 years of no political will.

Ooops,

After the 70s oil embargo we should have had ungodly research into nuclear, fusion, solar, and batteries.

Which is what happened... but fusion is still unrealistic (although just around the corner any year now for more than 50 years) while renewables and batteries are not centralized enough to be a cash cow for a few big companies.
So what was left was a high build up of nuclear back then. That never improved to the point where scaling effects they hoped for actually made it cheap.

But it fullfilled the most important function: making someone rich at the expense of most people. So they still cling to it like crazy, even if it's mostly only used to tell fairy tales that slow down renewable up build.

I, for one, hope reagan is rotting in hell with jimmy carter’s white house solar panels shoved up his ass.
