Not defending Israel here, but my understanding was they did want women and children for the initial 40 released. Hamas said they don’t have 40 women and children to release, so now Israel is demanding they release militarily capable hostages in order to hit the 40 number.

What the fuck? We've seen reports of sexual assault (not flat-out rape AFAIK, but that doesn't make it much better) against a few hostages, but nothing about it happening to children and sure as hell no sexual slavery. These hostages are there for a reason.
There are literally videos and pictures of Hamas and Gazan civilians raping women and children (yes... children...) during the October 7th massacre. Many of the few women rescued from Hamas' clutches claimed to have been raped, and the doctors who inspected/treated them also confirmed this. It's not propaganda, it's fact.
Yes, the hostages are there because Hamas is an evil terrorist regime with no respect for human life. Their mission is literally to wipe out all Jews in Israel and the entire world. Defending them is... not a great look for anybody.
Look in these situations you need to distinguish between things that happened on and after October 7th. While I haven't heard of child rape during October 7th, the context is about the hostages already in Gaza.

It means most of the hostages aren’t “civilians” as many people claim. So they’re more like POWs.
There aren’t really many “civilians” in israel to begin with tbf, except children. Half the population are IDF conscripts, and most of the other half are fascist settlers and colonizers just the same. Those were the main casualties in the Oct 7 attack too.
