Russia usually asks for gold or mineral mine ownership in exchange for their military services, whereas the US generally wants more policy concessions like holding elections.
The key is that Russia doesn’t really care about ideology in the way that the West does. It’s less of an attempt to align ideologies, more an attempt to gain allies directly.
