TW: Mild discussion of chronic health issues and grief.

I really miss being able to play MMO's, especially . I cannot cognitively keep up with worlds like that anymore and it makes me sads.

Everything feels like a job, a chore, a huge undertaking. When I can only spend about an hour a day playing a game (thanks, health)... that's just not it for me anymore. No more long play sessions.

Does anyone else out there feel this sort of grief related to ?

@britt I used to play MMOs as well, mostly FFXIV, and had friends I met through it. However, the stress of the MMO, particularly raids and trying to keep up with everyone took a massive toll on my mental health. I'm really sad that I had to give up and mostly lost those friends for the most part (although there are other issues there as well with keeping in touch).

You aren't alone in feeling grief from health issues.

@britt I feel something very similar, albeit not for chronic physical illness. The stress of grieving my wife, raising our baby, and frankly, the stress of the pandemic really has screwed with my mental faculties. Even now that I have a couple hours a day to play, I will login and have no idea what I ought to do.

The seasonal activities are great, but I’m not even caught up on renown for the base expansion. The game needs to give me a clean weekly checklist

bitingcat,

@britt Gaming (all kinds) is a mixed bag: started late plus kids ate my brain. I'd binge new RPGs over holidays. Got into family boardgames later. Now they're all cognitively and physically taxing and not always possible. Upside: college kid #1 has been helping me spec out and equip my BG3 characters - he is one with the stats: Downside: haven't been able to play since fall hit Seattle with a rain bazooka. It is super frustrating when my brain just won't work.

helgarakel,

@britt I understand your sorrow. I have chronic pain issues and can only play for about 2 hours a day.

I love playing games like Minecraft with other people. But it is hard to commit to a multiplayer world if I know that my health could mess everything up. It makes me both sad and lonely.

So currently I am enjoying single player games that I play in easy mode.

@helgarakel this is so relatable, on every level. 💜 ((hugs)) Thanks for sharing with me… it makes me feel less alone.

If you ever need someone to talk to about it, you can always drop me a DM. :)

KosmikrosSisters,

@britt :c Hugs!

siljelb,

@britt not really "illness" related as such, but I'm grieving for the loss of my ability to keep up interest in specific games. Before, I could play a single game for months. Nowadays I start playing something and hyperfocus on it for weeks, but within a month I'm sick of it and can't make myself play. My interest usually does come back in time, but by then I can't get back into the same game with the same people because it'll be finished or progressed too far for me to be able to catch up.

@britt I feel this so much. When Animal Crossing came out, I breathed, ate, slept that game 😂 Now I’m lucky if I have the energy to play for 30 min. Playing video games makes me feel as if I just graded papers for a few hours! It’s not relaxing anymore.

Sorry I don’t have much to say other than: you’re not alone 😫

@Morifemme <3 Thanks for replying and for the solidarity. I totally know that feeling... logs into game sees quests I need to do to catch up sighs turns off game lol

@britt lollll I did this just 20 minutes ago 😂 hopefully we’ll have a rare boost of energy soon!

Chigaze,

@britt I don't have a chronic illness however their came a point where so much of my world was ramping up my anxiety I had to back away from my roles in EVE-Online. I have found since enjoyment in good single player games including visual novel styles. Definitely liking anything I can dip into as I want. I also still play EVE but very lightly and no longer holding a major corp role although they still let me hang out. :)

I want to add that on the bright side... how I'm managing this is the following:

Finding new types of games that are more accessible to me. This looks like visual novels, turn-based RPGs, base-building games, and crafting sims.

I've really loved finding new indies that are accessible and make me feel like I can enjoy a hobby I thought might be lost with my illness.

Keep going friends, keep at it. You can overcome anything life puts in your way. <3

@britt

How is Palia working out for you?

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@raineyday I love the world, but I’m a bit bored with what the game offers right now. It is relaxing though and I definitely recommend it still.

    @doug hey! Sending your wife my best... the main health issue I have is ongoing chronic fatigue so I can definitely relate to her in that way. I'm so glad to hear she's found some games that bring her joy and allow for a relaxing playthrough experience. :)

    @britt I do. I wish I could play these things with my partner, who loves them more than anyone I know. The cognitive load is too much, especially since I work (from home, tg) and always end up using all my energy for that.
