Horizon Forbidden West (PC) looks glorious, but already fallen foul to basic tropes.
A sequel where your character has none of the skills you learned in the fist game.
And a companion that won't hesitate to start a fight while you're sneaking.

Early days, but disappointing.

@sidawson I'd certainly wait for a better price. It's not very different to the first so far, which is kinda fine, I loved the first. But I hoped this would be... more?
But yeah, not £50, esp. considering the layoffs too :(

It baffles my tiny brain that people on Tw!tter continue to be surprised that they can't reason with its leadership.

Is it friday? It feels like friday. I just wasted 20 minutes looking at @oaram and not reading that it was supposed to say @param.

(and yes, I have a very carefully chosen programming font, specifically designed to strongly differentiate between eg i1l|I etc etc)

<sigh><headdesk><headdesk><headdesk>

@sidawson I was reading out a guid yesterday and said, out loud, to my colleagues: "ELL" because why would I not think it's a 1?

Hope your Friday expedites to Saturday.

hey look at that, we quietly launched a new https://blog.glitch.com/ - a rewrite of the nextjs/prismic cms blog we'd been using into an @eleventy (v3 canary 5!) markdown blog. incredibly fast, and tbh easier for our content folks to edit and update. other fun bits:

@keith Not looking to spoil the stream if it's going to be a topic, but is the blog remix-able at all?
edit: wonderful to see all this cool work btw ❤️

If I understand the latest "Kate" news - she's not dead, but has in fact been prepared for succession in the face of possible criticism that the UK just paid for King Charles's coronation and now he's about to step down because of his cancer.

I'm not particularly interested, but as a moment of crisis management it's been handled poorly.

🌌 On this day in 1978 the very first episode of the very first version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went out on Radio 4. We can't tell you how proud that makes us.

Here's a lovely programme about Douglas and his creation, presented by his friend John Lloyd, that went out on the 40th anniversary.

A commercial decision by my emplyer requires that I pivot my learning from Azure to Google Cloud and Github Actions.

Convenient :(

Any recommendations for getting up to speed in a GCP world for an Azure novice (from a dev perspective)?

doug,
@doug@union.place avatar

@sidawson Mate, would never have thought to do that, but I see your point, thanks!
I've generally avoided gen AI tools because they risk lulling me into a false sense of security, but obviously thinking it through it's no more than when I read through search results to figure out which are genuine.

Much appreciated 👍🏻

I was asked what the first movie that ever scared me was.

It's impossible for me to say. Go far enough back and memories of movies blur into a single thing.

I can say it was black and white and had Peter Cushing in it.

doug,
@doug@union.place avatar

@selzero A friend played American Werewold in London on VHS when I was 12/13 and it terrified me. I spent most of the time hiding behind a newspaper.

I remember cycling home that night and the shadows from the headlamp played havoc with my imagination.

It was years later I learned it's supposedly a comedy, but I still can't see the funny side.

doug,
@doug@union.place avatar

@selzero I have come to appreciate the genre since, but that film is very firmly on the naughty step!
I should have known I wasn't ready, Dr Who (circa Tom Baker) scared me at the time.

Slept on the couch last night. Partner might be coming down with something. Statistically unlikely to be covid (lack of recent social activity), but tests are not reliable until day 3/4 with new variants. So, waiting to find out if it’s just a sore throat that’ll pass with sleep, or something much, much worse.

And in the mean time, being cautious. Aka not a complete fucking moron.

(Sorry, that covid denier that was here the other week really triggered me)

I hope you have access to antivirals, because I took Paxlovid midday Friday and by evening all symptoms were gone except for a light cold (stuffy nose, cough). Science rocks.

This is our first time having it. Fucked off everybody did such a cracking job keeping COVID alive for us after all this time.

doug,
@doug@union.place avatar

@sidawson frustrating as hell to catch it, but SO relieved the science delivered on the anviviral - I just hope it's accessible to you if you need it - seems like a small price for society to pay for wanting to get on with THEIR lives 😡

Hope you're all keeping well

For all the push for functionality in social media, the focus on moderation is just... barely considered?

Why do we never learn the lessons of the last failed project?

One could also replace Moderation with Accessibility and it would also be accurate, although people seem to think things would continue to function regardless.

Borrowed from the excellent original "Dependency" by #XKCD:

Supporting a system based on wholesale abuse of intellectual property rights is quite an unusual move. Polarising, you say? You're "both sides"ing theft.

@christineburns what a magical journey to witness, thanks for sharing. It's eye-opening how capable EVs are now for skeptics (me!) who have to date been too scared to make the commitment.

    Just to add, these aren't the only features I use, they're the features I had to switch clients.

    Not sure I can ever understand the devs of the main Mastodon app (not itself one of the two I used!) explicitly saying they won't add text sizing because they use relative sizing so can rely on the device to scale it. Truly ignorant.

    I would be astounded if anyone cared, BUT I'M GOING TO TELL YOU ANYWAY.... For dinner with the gnocchi I made a walnut and parsley pesto, braised some onions, boiled and sautéed the gnocchi and mixed in peas, spinach and bacon.

    Not impressed at all by the This Isn't bacon. Worst plant based bacon imo. Shame because their lardons are spot on.

    My review?....... Oily (but OK).

    @TheBreadmonkey We do love the Richmond sausages (the burgers not so much). I remove the skin and mix them with Paxo to make stuffing balls at christmas, honestly a perfect replacement.
    Loved the Applewood, it even melts well, and we enjoy Beyond burgers but they're "a lot", never occured to halve them!! Thank you again!
