Ow ow ow knees why are you hurting so bad? I know you don't like the rain, but this is extra-bitchy even for you ... oh wait, I had my latest COVID shot barely a week ago. Yep, the shots always seem to amp up my arthritis for two weeks after. Doesn't deter me from getting poked, though.

bitingcat,

@dkozlov good job you getting boosted! The timing was wrong with my last biologic infusion so I had to put it off till next month. Of course my son brought Covid home right after (narrow miss for the rest of it) and an adorable preschooler brought it over yesterday. Praying I miss it again...

I love , but I can't seem to achieve even a fraction of the speed that other knitters work at. On top of that, if I knit for too long, my elbows start to hurt.

I'm going to try out with my mom's old loom, and I'm hoping that this will be easier for me.

I'm also considering saving up for a knitting machine, since I really do love the fabric that knitting produces.

@knitting @fiberarts

bitingcat,

@leafygreens @knitting @fiberarts Definitely listen to your body. I blew out both elbows, thumbs, wrists, etc., before being diagnosed (plus host of other things) but the damage was done. Thanks to an amazing surgeon, physiatrist, and PT, I can knit and game again! But I have to take breaks and do stretches and strengthening exercises. I use pillows to prop up my arms and take some weight off, and alternate English, Continental, and Portuguese.

TW: Mild discussion of chronic health issues and grief.

I really miss being able to play MMO's, especially . I cannot cognitively keep up with worlds like that anymore and it makes me sads.

Everything feels like a job, a chore, a huge undertaking. When I can only spend about an hour a day playing a game (thanks, health)... that's just not it for me anymore. No more long play sessions.

Does anyone else out there feel this sort of grief related to ?

bitingcat,

@britt Gaming (all kinds) is a mixed bag: started late plus kids ate my brain. I'd binge new RPGs over holidays. Got into family boardgames later. Now they're all cognitively and physically taxing and not always possible. Upside: college kid #1 has been helping me spec out and equip my BG3 characters - he is one with the stats: Downside: haven't been able to play since fall hit Seattle with a rain bazooka. It is super frustrating when my brain just won't work.

Park knitting while my kid gets extra wet and sandy in the rain. This sock might actually get finished before the end of after all.

@knitting

bitingcat,

@terri @knitting literally the reason I learned to knit - I had a kid that required constant eyes on. I knitting a lot of self-striping playground socks. :)

bitingcat,

@tomkindlon @chronicillness @spoonies I've always been tetchy about sensory (neurodivergent family) but realized intolerance spike is a sign I've overdone it. Annoying AF when you've done nothing and your spoon drawer is rattlingly empty (and even the pretend sound hurts). Feet up, lights down, noise cancelling headphones on - sometimes it helps me not yell at the cat for being too loud.

It has been zero days since someone spoke a trigger word and made me rant uncontrollably about laser safety for the hobbyist, wherein I try to instill a sense of mortal fear into people thinking of buying a bolt-on diode laser for their 3D printer.

If you want to play with laser cutters, buy properly designed laser machines from reputable manufacturers, seek out training, and have good answers to beam, fume and fire safety. Don't buy rays of blinding from Honest Ron's Amazon Emporium.

bitingcat,

@danderson As if having a seriously PTSD combat vet/electrician father wasn't enough, moving the to the rural south as a kid really convinced me that EVERYTHING was trying to kill me. Scorpions. Bears. Chainsaws. Curling Irons. Some people think I'm paranoid; I have the scars to prove you can never be careful enough.

bitingcat,

@jkirkendall @knitting So feel that! And yet all my 00 are missing 🤷🏻‍♀️. I finally just put a single hole in the corner of a billion freezer quart zip bags, labeled them by size, then put the mess on a big screw together key chain ring. So far it's worked better than anything else. Also passed the brass ones on to a relative who doesn't have skin that causes them to discolor.

bitingcat,

@KatyKnits @knitting So true! I am increasingly prone to using my beloved graph paper to draw out changes as I (attempt to) math. But I probably have a bit of math learning disability and definitely am prone to brain fog due to and various other . Bonus - graph paper makes it easier for partner to check my work.

bitingcat,

@tomkindlon @longcovid @mecfs @spoonie Yup. Compared to my son (one of the really freaky Ehlers-Danlos zebras) I'm not that hypermobile. But, as I tell myriad niecelets and nephews, this hot mess is what you get when you keep sucking it up, pushing through the pain, and getting blown off by doctors for 50 years. + on top of , etc., and the torn tendons and ligaments show. 🎉🦄

bitingcat,

@tomkindlon @longcovid @mecfs I've recently realized my is a really useful tell rather than just a crippling side effect: if I have to seriously fight the urge to yell at the cat or the neighbor with the leaf blower, I've done too much and the crash is already on its way. If I can just manage to cover my ears and fetch my headphones, I'll probably be okay if I stop. Of course I could set my timer to remind me to take breaks, but what fun is that?

Astute post I thought about the problems we face

"I often have the impression that ME/CFS is an edge case in medicine, one where the advocacy community is quite active and vocal & thus exposes a lot of the deeper problems.

These include:

  • The popularity of unfounded psychosomatic theories for illnesses that medicine cannot yet explain or measure.
    (contd)"

bitingcat,

@KitMuse @tomkindlon @mecfs Agreed! Since kids were dx'd, I always told them autism, adhd, ocd, sensory processing, etc., all lived on the same playground, though nobody was really sure how they were all related. Now that I have hEDS dx, chronic fatigue, TOS, etc., seeing more research supporting my hypothesis that the EDS, Marfans, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue playground is right next door, and there's a lot of running back and forth.
