To me there are several levels to responding to a piece of writing:
- It doesn't grab you, so you move on invisibly.
- It does grab you, so you like or clap or love.
- It grabs you a bit more, so you share with others.
- It grabs you so much you want to tell the author what you thought and share some love so you comment.
- You sprout your own story that came to mind from reading theirs.
