“We must choose wisely in 2024. Tell your legislators how you and your children want to use our precious green land. We need Amtrak Cascades upgrades by 2030, not ultra high-speed rail in 2050, for our health and climate.” https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/upgrade-amtrak-cascades-or-build-high-speed-rail-the-choice-is-clear/

“Preliminary concepts for Amtrak Cascades service growth have surfaced, offering an early look into the potential direction of frequencies and infrastructure enhancements to support them. As part of a renewed service development plan process responding to public feedback, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has developed five options to illustrate different frequency levels, stop patterns, and top speeds.” https://www.theurbanist.org/2023/10/16/concepts-for-amtrak-cascades-service-growth-have-arrived/

Today I woke up at the crack of dawn to board the Amtrak Cascades from Vancouver to Seattle. Happy Friday!

Me seating on the Amtrak cascades. The windows are dark since it’s still pitch-black outside

Sure it's unfortunate that we even need buses to complete some of the scheduled service for , but this is pretty cool:

"Amtrak and WSDOT unveiled their first electric bus Wednesday that will transport travelers for a portion of the Amtrak Cascades route. The bus will provide transportation between Seattle and Bellingham with stops in Everett and Mount Vernon and can make the nearly 200-mile roundtrip on a single charge."

" service between and is, like much of the US passenger rail system, underwhelming. [...] Soon, however, residents could see what’s really possible. Under the national rail carrier’s proposed 15-year, $75 billion expansion plan, Portland-to-Seattle service would be more than tripled to 13 trips a day." And this is even without any upgrades! https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-14/inside-amtrak-s-75-billion-plan-to-revive-us-train-travel
