I was experimenting with the Quicktake protocol I documented in hopes of finding a way to turn its connection to 115kbps. Did not manage that but it looks like I managed to dump (part of?) its firmware! There are some funny/strange strings in it.

I got a few days off (it was GREAT) and meanwhile, @fozztexx tested QuickTake for Apple II on a wide range of Apple 2's. I have a little bit of hope it's going to work across the whole range now!
Oh, and also, preliminary 200 support!

Released 1.10.0 with these changes!

So the last news on the project is:
✅ QuickTake 100 works
✅ QuickTake 150 works

Well, it seems I'll need to source a QuickTake 200 for completion 😏

I said I'd do a binary release if there was some interest, and @cquest is interested, so here it is after a full day's work, the first presentable release of Quicktake for Apple II!
(I love holidays)

Who said progress bars should be limited to a single line?

I decided to show dithering in real time, but I may add a progress bar

I have found a better way to process my image and I can now store the resized, 256x192 8-bpp image in memory, which allows me to:

  • not lose performance, while adding:
  • histogram equalization
  • single pass dithering, which in turn allows me to:
  • use Burkes algorithm, giving much better results than Bayer

All this and I still have a whopping 183 bytes of free memory to spare!

15 minutes of patience and there should be a good HGR picture.

VICTORY over the hardware! I connected the 100 to my !
It was quite difficult as the Quicktake only starts talking once DTR goes down - which is just an ioctl() on a modern PC, but shutdowns the ACIA 6551 on the Apple II.
I built a monstruous cable with a mini-DIN8 on one side and... two DIN-5 on the other. One of them does Rx/Tx, the other DTR.
I use the modem port for Rx/Tx and the printer port for DTR.

Let's say it's good enough and we'll see about the bottom band some other day.

  1. Photo as decoded by dcraw
  2. Photo as decoded by my tool
  3. Final photo as will maybe someday be displayed on a real

It takes 14 minutes on the to load, decompress and transform this 640x480 image.

Same picture, decoded in grey levels
Same picture, scaled to 280x192 and dithered in black and white.
