Jannetje Johanna Schaft was born in 1920 in Haarlem, Netherlands. She became a Dutch Resistance fighter who went by the nom de guerre “Hannie.”

In 1938 she enrolled at the University of Amsterdam to pursue law with a goal of becoming a human rights lawyer. She became friends with fellow students Sonja Frenk & Philine Polak, who were Jews, & became increasingly concerned about the rise in antisemitism. (1/5)

After the German occupation of the Netherlands, Schaft became active opposing the Nazis and protecting Dutch Jews. She stole identity papers to provide to Jews so that they could avoid deportation. These actions brought her to the attention of the Council of the Resistance, who recruited her at age 20. She was asked to be a courier but Schaft refused - she wanted to kill Nazis. (2/5)

She orchestrated the rescue of enslaved people using a network of antislavery activists known as the Underground Railroad, served as a spy and military advisor to Union troops during the Civil War, and was an activist for social justice in the post-war period.

Nancy Grace Augusta Wake, AC, GM (30 August 1912 – 7 August 2011), also known as Madame Fiocca and Nancy Fiocca, was a nurse and journalist who joined the French Resistance and later the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II, and briefly pursued a post-war career as an intelligence officer in the Air Ministry.

Jan 29, 1919: On this date, Marina Ginestà was born in Toulouse. At age 17, she was photographed in an iconic image from the Spanish Civil War standing on the roof of a hotel in Barcelona. “Dressed in military uniform with the wind in her hair, & armed with a rifle (the first & only time in her life, she later stated), Marina was witness to a historic moment, & instantly became a symbol of the hopefulness of revolution.”

Noor Inayat Khan was born on January 1, 1914 in Moscow to an Indian father and an American mother. She served in the Special Operations Executive using the pseudonym Nora Baker and code-name Madeleine. She was the first British female wireless operator sent to occupied France to assist the French Resistance. She is Britain’s first Muslim war heroine. (1/9)
