mischievous is a 3 syllable word right or am i the asshole here?

MarkMaguire,

@yurnidiot You’re definitely being mis-chie-v-ous for sure.

MarkMaguire,

@yurnidiot None of yous is from Dubilin and it shows. We pronounce ev-er-y syllable of the Engilish language. And we add a syllable if it fee-els right. And it ALWAYS fee-els right. We’ll have none of that Quee-en’s Engilish arou-ind here, thanking you.

MarkMaguire,

@yurnidiot Don’t worry, just go with the flow and we’ll have you talking properly in no ti-ime. 😜

MarkMaguire,

@mcmullin @yurnidiot It’s lucky this is text-based social mejya because we may not understand each other much verbally 😅

♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

MarkMaguire,

@mekkaokereke Still, sorry you had to go through that in the first place. Glad it got deescalated in the end.

This will be a fun poll to finish before this week's Grammar Girl podcast:

What do you think of the way "contact" is used in the following sentence? Is it acceptable in formal Standard English?

She called an officer at the Naval Intelligence Service, who in turn contacted the FBI.

I'm not asking if you'd use it yourself. I'm asking if you'd think it was wrong if you saw it used this way in a textbook or a serious magazine.

MarkMaguire,

@grammargirl Sounds fine to me. I get that this is probably one of these shifts in word usage which irks some people (actually me being one of those people usually - but I don’t remember a time when contact wasn’t used as a verb, so this one has zero annoyance for me).

It is worth noting that even under the “high migration” scenarios given by the CSO, which assume a net migration of 30,000 people a year from 2017 onwards – a figure that includes all immigration, not just refugees, and not just from Africa –it would take more than 130 years to reach a figure of 4 million migrants.

MarkMaguire,

@FSonder Thanks for posting. From listening to Knowledge Fight pod, the core part of Jones’s and his lackeys’ grift is to refer only to headlines from publications and sites which they can wildly misinterpret according to whatever lies they’re making-up that episode. They never actually engage with the content in the body of these articles or papers because even the most minor effort to do so (as you’ve shown) would betray their scam. Jones et al are really unmitigated pricks.

@soheb With you on that. The weather gods have heard our pleas and we will be soon deluged. But a bit of moderation would be fine with me.

I just saw a huge black dragonfly flying about the garden here. I’ve never seen a dragonfly or damselfly here before. We get plenty of butterflies, moths, and grasshoppers but I’ve never seen one of these here before.

It was very large with green or yellow patches on its body. Definitely much bigger than the common iridescent blue ones I sometime see at it hiking. 8 maybe even 10 cm long. It’s abdomen was quite bulky too.

No chance of getting a picture sadly.

MarkMaguire,

@helvick Mahoosive yoke hovering around our front garden yesterday - Northside Dublin

MarkMaguire,

@helvick I remember very, very rarely seeing big ones like yesterday but it was decades ago. Usually in rural parts, in summer. Until yesterday, never saw one that big in suburbia. Also like you, I blinked and it was gone.

I bought some stuff for lunch while the youngest kid was at ballet class. Stepping out of the air conditioned patisserie into the all-encompassing heat of another blindingly bright July day here in the South of France, I realised I’M IN FECKIN’ RAHENY ON THE NORTHSIDE OF DUBLIN IN MID-SEPTEMBER. BLEEDIN’ CLIMATE CRISIS but still enjoying the free foreign holiday in my head all the same.

MarkMaguire,

@Navifax I’m all for holidays in my head but yeah, just South of France weather on its own without all the things that make the South of France special is not the real deal 🥵

MarkMaguire,

@chongliss @MacDara I keep it quiet that I’m just tumbleweed when I’m blowing through from Clare Hall 😝

MarkMaguire,

@chongliss Nah, just Butlers. Wait, JUST Butlers? ‘Tis far from Butlers I was reared.

I get that some folk think Scotland should be ruled from London. It easy to understand when we had a lifetime of press and political comment telling us that Scotland is too wee, too poor and our people are too dim so we can''t govern ourselves.
A message to such folk. The rich are filling their pockets and living lives of luxury while taking ordinary folk for granted and assuming that things will never change. They are laughing at you. Get aff yer knees.

This was not as easy a choice by the court as it may appear.

Obvs, the decision by EB to just be in daily contempt of court invites consequences, and cash fines hasn’t, to date, dissuaded him.

I love when inspirational posters say something like "LIVE FEARLESSLY!" Sounds cool, but how exactly? Also no fear at all sounds dangerous, pretty sure fear is an Evolutionary necessity. The poster should really say something like "LIVE WITH FEAR, BUT NOT SO MUCH THAT ANXIETY RULES YOUR LIFE AND YOU'RE NOT DOING THE THINGS YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO DO. BELOW ARE SEVERAL RESOURCE RECOMMENDATIONS!"

MarkMaguire,

@RickiTarr Live Fearlessly. Just not that fearlessly.

QUESTIONS: THE SEQUEL

What would be the worst movie to have a sequel?

What would you call this terrible sequel?

I think I’ll start a thread of actors with Irish connections turning up in stuff I’m watching. Last Friday I went full insert Leonardo di Caprio pointing at TV meme when Fiona O’Shaughnessy turned up in Foundation on Apple+.

MarkMaguire,

Foundation this week had Orla O'Rourke as Empress Winnoset II and Doireann May White as an ensign.

Young Ensign on a spaceship deck turning to a commander saying “Imperial switchbacks.”
