BRASS AGAINST's Cover Of ALICE IN CHAINS' "Would?" Strikes The Balance Between Tribute And Originality
Wisely retaining the original's melancholic atmosphere while infusing it with their own signature.
Imagine Django. This album featuring a slew of artists, no all (though most) in the jazz manouche tradition was released for the 70th anniversary of Django's death in 1953. What attracted me to it (besides the word "Django") was young musicians (by and large), names I hadn't seen and heard of and perhaps most importantly, instrumentations different than the classic doublebass, rythm, lead (with added violin or accordion as extra flavour) that prevails in the manouche styles. Here we have piano and violin on a really interesting Rythme Futur, we have harmonica on Bricktop, we have trumpet on Troublant Boléro, and many other unusual pairings. There are vocals on a couple of tunes with original lyrics added to Django themes. All in all it is the surprise I was hoping for and while there's still a lot of guitar, it doesn't sound like most of my manouche records. If you like Django's music, well worth a listen. #music#jazz#gypsyjazz#djangoreinhardt#tribute
