Hi #hci folks! We’re curious - what is your opinion of research synthesis and specifically systematic reviews within HCI? Let us know what you think these can look like or can result in > here via this link: https://bit.ly/3oBteKA We’ll summarise the results towards the end of the month. #chi2023#chi2024#acmchi
Lovely/wistful to reflect on how much of my #chi2023 and #metascience2023 conference interactions were enriched by Twitter ("I know you from Twitter!").
Harder to do this if more and more of our online social interactions retreat to the "cozyweb" as the dark forest of the open social web gets darkened by enshittification.
BTW, my collection of weird HCI papers still needs a good entry from #chi2023 😉 Suggestions welcome! (of course also from other venues, if you've got something)
Researchers used comics to explore how community-centered AI design can include both the people experiencing #homelessness and the frontline workers who use #AI to help them. This work bridges the gaps between the technical & social of computer science, and between researchers & impacted communities.
Back from #chi2023, spent a whole morning reading through updates in Ben Shneiderman's Human-Centered AI Google group updates. Human agency & control, metaphors of AI teammates v.s. supertools, many great ideas and can't recommend more! Sign up here: https://groups.google.com/g/human-centered-ai/
Wir waren für eine Woche in Hamburg und haben die #CHI2023 Konferenz besucht (plus präsentiert!). Dazu haben wir ein kleines VLOG in #ÖGS gemacht, um euch bisschen mitzunehmen.
#CHI2023 is over, but in case you missed any of our papers you can watch all the talks online now! These new four devices represent lots of hard work by PhD students Jas Brooks , Romain Nith (& co-authors), Yudai Tanaka (& co-authors), and former intern Arara Jingu (Alan is posing here with LipIO since Arata is doing his PhD in Germany now!). You can watch me try all four devices here: https://youtu.be/7QBwi8pu0sI and check all the CHI talks in our lab page (https://lab.plopes.org)
I dream of a world where you don't need to be force infected with a neurovascular disease that behaves similarly to Hep C and HIV to go to a conference.
The possibilities are endless for protecting the health and safety of our community.
If you're feeling anxious and depressed right now about your forced infection at #CHI2023 know that it isn't your fault. Let's channel the rage of injustice at organizers who refuse to live in reality.
I SWEAR YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS 💩💩💩 UP! It was negative this morning!
Did I meet any of the people on here for more than 5 seconds, #CHI2023? I was always masked when indoors, so if I was infectious that presumably mitigated it.
Do we hold AI systems to a higher standard regarding how they explain their behavior? When people explain their behavior in natural language, there's a gap between the words they use and the underlying causal mechanisms that actually drove their behavior. Are we more tolerant of this gap in people than we are in AI systems? #HCXAI#CHI2023
Here's a new idea from the #HCXAI#CHI2023 workshop: Seams in AI systems are mismatches or gaps between the design & expectations of a system versus how that system is actually used. It's like how everyone expects AI to take over the world when real AI systems still confuse cats with dogs...
Today's second #CHI2023 :chi: contribution from @princeton is this whimsical project:
Dream Garden is a mobile AR app that allows groups of people to create a collaborative virtual garden with flowers and messages at a physical location.
The project was led by a talented undergrad Liz Petrov.
...and now Liz Petrov wins the undergrad Princeton Innovation and Entrepreneurial Mindset Award 🏆 for her project on Location-Based, Collaborative AR. She presented this at #CHI2023 last month.
