Ha! I forgot, I did once do an article version of my arrays talk for php[architect].

https://www.phparch.com/article/never-use-arrays/

Subscribers can get it from the archive. I don't recall if I still have a copy myself I can put on my blog. :-)

Interesting chat at (@phptek) today.

My stance: Uninitialized variables and array keys are fine. Back-end security issues with setting them should be fixed in core, not worked around by banning them.

Please, convince me that uninitialized variables are wrong. I WANT TO BELIEVE!

And no, the following reasons do not convince me:

  1. It's Best Practice
  2. That's how other languages do it
  3. It's messy, ugly, or any other subjective term
  4. Real programmers should do things the right way

Use Value Objects rather than massive $options arrays when exposing an interface for configuring requests made by your SDK, because you want to make your SDK code as self-documenting as possible. - @SecondeJ

Put business logic in your SDK. Don't just wrap curl. And have very clear and in-depth testing because those tests document what the API is supposed to do. - @SecondeJ

When I was revamping "Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt!" talk (11am Central tomorrow morning here at !) I wrote a whole section on the , which I then had to cut out for time.

I ended up writing a blog post about it instead, which I just published: https://stevegrunwell.com/blog/adapter-pattern/

Hey , less than two hours until we talk about on the . Be there or be…in another session more aligned with your interests and/or learning goals.

Or taking time for yourself (remember: we’re only halfway through the conference and it’s important to pace yourself).

Or building lifelong friendships with fellow attendees.

I hope you spend the 3pm hour with me, but however you choose to spend it I hope you enjoy!

PHP upgrades are easier with tests, ci-cd, static analysis and orchestration. Up front investment always sucks but it pays off so much. Our last PHP upgrade took less than an hour.
