Microsoft is really giving me a hard time. Trying to unblock a mail-server for outlook.com is ... challenging ...

Last treat: Whenever I try to load the SNDS site I get a 200 response with no content 🙈

Other treats included help-pages with all links ending in 404s or logouts that do not log you out...

Sometimes I wonder whether that outlook thingy is just a huge phishing scam...

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas they also use spamhaus lists and each 365 enterprise can have additional blacklists

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas they're also getting really picky about spf, dkim and dmarc being right

Yes all 3

Ugh

Look at that, Microsoft put MS Dos on github

I'm living in bizarro world I think

The best documentation is written by newcomers

They find the important stuff that the current folks "already know"

We need more cool applications written in PHP

I remember the blog and framework and CMS wars

Those times of competition made everything better

The way to get into open source is to show up. Mailing lists, github, discord and slack. Ask questions, read. But first you have to just show up.

auroraeosrose, to random

if every user did just one documentation fix a year - what @ramsey calls "light open source contributions"

We would be light-years ahead

auroraeosrose, to random
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

I would argue with @ramsey s statement that being active on mailing lists and helping others isn't being involved in open source

Every answer someone gives to a user's problem is mental weight a maintainer or contributor can let go of

PHP upgrades are easier with tests, ci-cd, static analysis and orchestration. Up front investment always sucks but it pays off so much. Our last PHP upgrade took less than an hour.

The best way I've heard AI(llm) assistance with coding is it's moving the work to code review instead of code generation. Considering how bad most people are at code review... this will not end well.

Again, this going to be unpopular — why not offer these folks a chance to learn PHP? If they know Python it will be very straightforward.

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer that's mind boggling to me. I've a set of juniors here who have gone from Java (school) to PHP, python, and C# all at the same time.

Python has actually been the "this is weird" outlier in learning. The majority of C based languages are easy to jump around in...

To my Michigander friends: what exactly do you consider to be the UP (upper peninsula)?

I had someone tell me they live in Indian River “in the UP,” and I looked it up on a map, and it’s not where I always assumed the UP to be.

I assumed the UP was the stretch of land that’s across the lake and connected to Wisconsin. It’s the land that is literally a peninsula. Is my assumption wrong?

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey The UP is anything you have to go over the bridge or drive to from Wisconsin - it's physically the upper peninsula and if they actual said that, they're wrong.

However there's some weird Michigander terminology you might have misheard. Are you sure they didn't say "up north" instead?

That's a different thing. Pretty much anything north of US 10 has generally been the dividing line for "up north" in Michigan. Runs from the edge of the thumb to Ludington on the lake.

It’s cloudy in Nashville, where we’ll see 95% totality at the eclipse max, but we won’t see it because clouds.

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @derickr @josh just passed here. Dark enough to see still but streetlights came on. And it was cold!

grmpyprogrammer, to random
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

I am north of the path of totality for the eclipse — the nearest spot is 90 minutes south of me but in all honesty it felt like it was gonna be a huge hassle to go and see it. 🤷‍♂️

auroraeosrose,
@auroraeosrose@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer It's 97.6% here on a sunny, almost cloudless day. 3 hour drive either south or east to totality though... on a workday....
