Hi! This is the main Fediverse account of a blog about LINux on MOBile devices – linmob.net. It's has been restarted in 2020 because of the PinePhone.

Used to be https://identi.ca/linmob. Also on the birdsite: https://nitter.net/linmobblog.

It's been almost 5 years but I've written a new blog post again! This time describing my setup for daily driving on after a bit more than a week of using it.

@thejackimonster Not sure it's that — both devices have been marketed as new, reviewed by many publications (including all kinds of YouTubers).
As "new" devices they fit the model of "new" = "exciting". The OnePlus 6 w/ postmarketOS (to just pick one example) maybe much better in various ways, but it's not a new device. It's an old phone, that just runs something new now. This does not fit the standard "we review all the new crap" model, and, without hardware kill switches, (1/2)

@thejackimonster it does not attract the privacy crowd as much. (2/2) @bart

@shadowwwind Of course, I am far, far, far too lazy to move files around when I can just post from the device 😎

I finally decided to get a proper second device to run on, so I bought a Pixel 3A! Fully mainline and is very fluent on it, it's great!

I'll keep my sim-card in my Android phone for now but I'll use it to browse the fediverse (), watch YouTube (), browse the web (), chat on Matrix (), etc. I'll probably find a ton of bugs, so let's get these reported and fixed!

Don't let Flathub become the new app store monopoly.

linmob,
@linmob@fosstodon.org avatar

@erebion It doubt it will become that.
Enough people will use tribal infighting and not put their apps there, like we always do in desktop Linux (which IMHO is really sad, because so far flathub, with all its downsides is IMHO the best approach at a "one stop shop for Linux apps" so far). And while flathub has the highest app count in https://linuxphoneapps.org/packaged-in/, we probably need to discount the apps with outdated runtimes that likely won't install anymore.

So... there's a free software conference (#FOSSY [1]) in #pdx (Portland, OR) this year, and I was thinking of applying to have a table there where folks could bring (supported) devices they want to flash with #postmarketOS, or just to hang out and chat about pmOS or #linuxmobile.

Does this sound like a good idea?

@craftyguy While I won't attend (too far away, sorry) .. YES GOOD IDEA! Stuff like that can be quite the blast :-) https://linmob.net/lit-2023-stand-experiences/

Also, tons of Matrix and IRC rooms that may be worth joining, see https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Matrix_and_IRC

If anyone is wondering whether the ASUS Flip C101p is my Pro + Keyboard replacement: In some use cases, maybe — but it lacks 4G and, comparatively, is a freaking giant:

@swisscheese Yeah, it has a vertical screen and ... when you connect an external display, good luck ever turning that internal screen back on. My best guess so far is that the display needs a proper driver, it's really not much fun. nomodeset makes it more reliable, but also slower. I don't even know if it works better with Windows, I bought it without an SSD and thus did not try it with the copy of Windows these otherwise come with.

@Shatur The P8? I would like to, but the experience so far has been worse than PPP + Keyboard, see https://fosstodon.org/@linmob/112266003846898693

So they discontinue the PinePhone Keyboard? Any source/chats I can read up on?

linmob,
@linmob@fosstodon.org avatar

@Shatur Thanks! Funeral is a good moderator, but I doubt they have inside info. I agree that it would be a loss, although I would appreciate Keyboard v2 with revised, more reliable main board and a better indication (led?) regarding "is this charging the device". (Also: backlit keys would be awesome, making it more generic (beyond PinePhone, by adding BT for keyboard and USB charging) would be lovely, and I would happy to pay way more for just a more reliable keyboard.) Today I managed to flash to my (new-to-me, abandoned by ) ASUS Chromebook Flip C101P. It's now able to boot postmarketOS from the internal eMMC (with fde!)

@haui Apologies for offending you. The thing is: Different people perceive things differently, and most likely everybody can do better with trying to put things in a way that they are most unlikely to be misread/misperceived. I was trying to help here, then got annoyed, I failed. Sorry.
