We had some #sporadicE in late morning/early afternoon... but that was nothing compared to over 6 hours (!) of a HUUUUUUGE Es opening to Mallorca, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria & Greece!
Even logged 2 Greek stations as late as 2129z = 0:29am in Greece! 😱
And I have 62 IQ files totalling 45.1 GB + an hour or two (idk) of unattended scan on YT.
On live listening only, I made 173 logs. Could be more but FMLIST didn't cooperate at some point.
Europe's total? 9366 logs from 229 DXers 😬🤯✈ #fmdx
Meanwhile, Make More Miles on VHF reports about #sporadicE on #2m!
Some users of the site reported QSOs with stations located as little as 1000km away 😮 Imagine where the MUF was to allow such a short skip on 144 MHz 🤯
The best takeway though is that 2m DXers are coming back to voice contacts, as they notice #FT8 isn't that effective on such decent openings (at least if you use a Yagi of at least 9 elements that is 😆)
And this is a map for Polish DXers only. Besides me, 9 guys have been at it @ 0814-1024z, then 1154-1252z an OIRT opening observed in Kraków, and finally the whole madness from 1427z all the way until the last logs of mine @ 2053z, followed by those 2 Greeks (87.9 ERA Sport, 87.6 Radio Stagon in Kalampaka!) @ 2123 & 2129z, respectively.
A special mention for the Kraków DXer (I believe it's @modulator on YT), who got Kringvarp Foroya 🇫🇴 on ̶5̶3̶1̶ ̶k̶H̶z̶ 89.9 & 97.5 MHz!
Now I'd like to try to analyze those logs but my PC can't even handle that amount of data, markers and lines 😂
Lucas (@TransistorFR on YouTube) in Brindas 🇫🇷 logged 10 stations at 705km & less, definitely out-of-standard for FM #sporadicE 😅 incl. 87.5 Radio Easy Rock in Aviano🇮🇹, 606km.
Another French listener, F5EMT, had Egypt on 90.6 (2672km) & 89.5 (2989km).
Also remarkable IMHO is France Bleu RCFM (Corsica) making it almost to 64N, in Finland.
I'm in the process of reviewing a recording of an unattended, continuous FM scan I felt I should leave running this afternoon... and my feelings were right, 'cause after 1500z I had not the strongest, and not the most steady, but still a good #sporadicE opening to Algeria 🇩🇿 & Tunisia 🇹🇳
And here is a map of all logs submitted to FMLIST around the same time I've been receiving these stations. All TX-RX paths crossed near Slovenia-Croatia border, which indicates where the Es cloud that sponsored these receptions was 🙂
Well, this map of locators heard indicates that, actually, only some of these stations are DX, the rest are in Konigsberg exclave, all close to the RX, all groundwave.
So why isn't Olsztyn getting the same DL/OK/etc. DX as the zombies a few dozen km up? 😳 #6m#SporadicE#OpenWebRX
Physical radio, using real antennas, picking up real radio waves rather than streaming, with all its quirks, limitations, and occasional anomalies 😲.
Currently my main focus is Sporadic-E propagation, which allows FM radio stations, normally restricted to line-of-sight reach, to travel thousands of km's away ✈️
During a session I had during a #sporadicE opening to E Turkey & Syria earlier today I was surprised to see SDR# built-in RDS decoder sometimes outperforming RDS Spy.
Turns out, setting up audio levels can be tricker than you think 😉
I had to set MPX Output plugin's audio level to the lowest possible non-zero value... and now everything's back to normal: RDS Spy wipes the floor with SDR# 🤠 #fmdx
