Koren Publishers has just released "The Madwoman in the Rabbi's Attic" by Gila Fine. The book focuses on how the women mentioned in the #Talmud are more complex than we think at first reading ~ the book finds early #feminist views of #marriage sex, childbirth, and what it means to be a woman buried within the Talmud.
A little over a year ago, originally due to an interest in the deeper history of #compilers, I started diving deep into the #Talmud, studying #Aramaic, #gematria, and doing #DafYomi etc in what has become my deepest engagement with the rabbinic corpus yet -- the Talmud isn't a compiler but rather an extensible interpreter, compiled by compilers over the course of many centuries (build times have gotten significantly faster, my G-d), with novel extensions in the form of rabbinic commentary, glossia and the like being added nearly every century by publishers competing to compile the most elegant editions (Vilna Shaws being paradigmatic). And through studying Talmud and the greater body of rabbinic literature I've found myself encountering #magic/sorcery occasionally, and I just gotta say -- the #SICP metaphor of programming as pure magic, with the #hacker as a sorcerer, goes insanely deep when you start to dig into it.

Rabbi Akiva Eiger (1761 - 1837 CE) was a distinguished Talmudic scholar, influential halachic authority, and beloved leader of European Jewry. His father’s last name was Gins but as an adult he took his mother’s name of Eiger. He wrote insightful notes in the margins of his copy of the Talmud, which were posthumously published in the margins of the now standard Vilna edition of the Talmud as the commentary Gilyon HaShas (גליון הש"ס) which means ‘margin of the Talmud’.
The motivation for armed combat with others would require it be an act of State, not of religion.
The concept of "Jihad" would indicate the aggression is less of an intervention, but in fact an act to reduce ranks of other creeds, and to enlarge the aggressor's creed.
The prejudice on, and mongering of, violence within the tenets of the creeds would say you need to avoid allowing them to bootstrap, and cleanse their wrong doing as such.
This is where religions validate their violence by making their creed a State.
