I just had an idea: It would probably be feasible to implement a way to install and run any Flatpak-packaged desktop Linux app on Windows and macOS inside a micro-VM, using a virtual machine host like Firecracker, or more likely, Firecracker's progenitor crosvm, which was designed for running an arbitrary Linux userland on Chrome OS. I believe crosvm can even run on Windows, using the Windows Hypervisor Platform (also called WHPX).

@matt currently at work I have to use windows and there are some nice Linux apps that I definitely miss. It would be great to easily run flatpak apps cross platform.

What's better for coding videos, dark mode or light mode?

@grrrck I usually prefer to use light mode but for a video the worst thing is accidentally being blinded in a dark room by a way too bright video.

The publisher of a small imprint of roleplaying games magazines/speculative fiction shuts down after 22 years because their submissions have been flooded with AI to the extent they cannot wade through them:

“The problem with AI is the people who use AI. These are people who think their ‘ideas’ are more important than the actual craft of writing, so they churn out all these ‘ideas’ and enter their idea prompts and think the output is a story.”

@jasonkoebler reminds me of people that have this attitude: '"I have this great app idea, just need someone to make the app for me"

So I’m going to try to not take a laptop with me on this year

I’ve ordered a small external keyboard in case I need to type longer texts - a Arteck HB066 https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-mobile-keyboards/ (which is called a eSynic HB066 if you want a German QWERTZ layout), and have a dongle to read SD and Micro SD cards on the iPhone and give presentations with HDMI

Saving myself almost 2kg of luggage weight will be welcome! 🙂

@jon I thought of the clockwork pi uConsole as a nice portable travel computer — not sure though If it's worth the price. So going with a phone and keyboard might be the best option.

Okay, this seems to be way too hard of a question to answer satisfactorily, so I will outsource to the hivemind/Internet/Fediverse…

What is the best way to launch a single GUI app fullscreen automatically on boot with the least overhead on a Raspberry Pi? I have wanted to do this for my own GTK apps but would also settle for a Chromium kiosk mode (which I know how to open from the command line—the question is more about the session/wm/autostart angle).

@cassidy you could probably use https://www.hjdskes.nl/projects/cage/ but I have not tried it myself.

Apparently Weston also has a kiosk mode:

@organicmaps actually seem like a usable alternative to Google Maps. Will default to them for a bit for driving and walking navigation and come back later with some thoughts, but first impressions are great!

@13hannes11@fosstodon.org avatar

@fourstepper @organicmaps i think where it falls short is if you want a place to eat because then open data usually is missing quite a lot of places and you also cannot see any reviews or ratings. For navigation it's great though.
