It's currently the sweetest, softest Spring-into-Summer evening where I am... Great weekend so far. Biked the neighborhood yard sale Friday, collecting little treasures to give to the 1-3 year-olds we saw at brunch and a bbq today. Brunch hosted by someone we met when she was nine. BBQ hosted by our young neighbors, whose toddler is letting us try out being grandparents. Spring + humans vibing together is an amazing reminder of the reasons to be hopeful.

@mrcompletely The seasons when the line between inside and outside disappears are idyllic. I wouldn't want to live in San Diego, where this is always true; it's important to have the idyllic times arrive, after going away for a while. Spoken as a true Michigan boy.

As May ’77 madness comes ‘round again, bolstered this year by the release of 1.5 more May ’77 shows (Dave’s 50 shipping now), I encourage you to check out two hours of jammy highlights from the tour’s first two shows on April 22-23, in Philadelphia and Springfield.

If you find May ’77 too “same-y,” I think you’ll find this music less so. Second and third performances of "Fire!"

The announcement of a live 1968 Mothers of Invention box brings this household great joy.

A while back, Save Your Face sifted a ton of late ‘60s Mothers tapes and created a couple of big mixes of instrumental and improvisational material. King Kong, Pound for a Brown, Sleeping in a Jar, Eric Dolphy Memorial BBQ, Green Genes, Uncle Meat, Dog Breath Variations, Orange County Lumber Truck… that kind of music.

The SYF mixes remain available to grab as mp3s.

Hey I just got laid off, anyone got a job? Sadly I'm just a manager recently but I'm superb at it. Glad to work outside of tech. Whee

Edit: and software designer. I kick ass at that. But mostly I translate and coordinate between different specialties to make a coherent team, turn goals into plans and then run those plans. Done a lot of hiring and professional development work too. Great at weeding out the bozos and assholes. Oversight and compliance of every kind. Would love to work for a cause

@mrcompletely I'm so sorry. I don't know if it ever caught fire, but I did content strategy and copywriting for this company that offers to pair software experts with companies for gig work. https://myworkerbee.com/

fans: There will surely be a "Blues for Allah" reissue in 2025. Will we get a comprehensive boxed set of the vast/important rehearsals... or something much smaller and extremely disappointing?

Here's a delightful little creature from those rehearsals/sessions:

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I don't truly want a comprehensive box - just a large one. I'm a pretty dedicated purchaser of archival Dead releases, but I haven't bought any of the recent series of studio album reissues. They seem like bullshit to me.

I really like the early throbbiness of “West LA Fadeaway.” At some point it relaxed into a more “Althea”-like execution and lost some of the grim, hard edge. This version is the 10th performance of the song from 41 years ago this week.

@mrcompletely "Way to Go Home" underwent a similar shift, throbby in 92-93, jaunty in 94.

35 years ago, my most fun Grateful Dead run - Ann Arbor, April 5-6, 1989. Walked to the shows from my apt. Center of the 8th and 13th rows with all my hometown Heads. Club show experience.

I’d seen some 1988 shows, and this seemed like a different band. Tight, confident, energetic, having fun, singing well, jamming fluidly. Mighty!

I pulled together my favorite 3 hours from the run.

It's the 33rd anniversary of me finally getting what I was looking for.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I've hardly begun to listen to the Hornsby era, so your judgement here is good to know. The Greensboro shows are as great as they felt at the time. Best live Dead I ever saw ('88-'93).

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @thesizzler Super-fine, jazzed out Bird Song as well. When they played it in the first set of 4/1, I assumed Dark Star would be off the menu in the second set. But no! So many boxes checked on those two nights. My little Veneta experience.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely "Any flaws were rounded down to zero" is a great rubric.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I was only thinking about sober evaluations based on tape listening. Based on retrospective listening, I underestimated the live experience more than I overestimated. LOL.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda @mrcompletely I'd say that Bruce was the best keyboardist they ever had, without throwing anyone else (including Vince) out of bed.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chopaganda I look to keyboard players first for their dialogue with Garcia. I want to say Hornsby was the best one for jazz-level jousting. Mydland was maybe best as a Jerry-prompt '79-'81, and later maybe too much a competing flavor?

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chopaganda Agreed. I have no categorical gripes against Brent, but I do feel that those who write off post-Brent Dead are overrating Brent and/or underrating post-Brent Dead. Space opened up, and you can judge how it was used however you like.

Here's a fantastic Space improv passage from 30 years ago tomorrow. Jason Crane has identified the source of the vocal sample: "Something Within Me" by Take 6.

@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

Deadhead question: When assessing the quality of an individual performance of a song, how important is it to you that the song is sung robustly, with accurate lyrics? Do you care if the performance could stand alone to represent the song itself to a new audience, or can the vocals be buried or a whole verse f@cked up, and you'd still call it a good take, because of the jam, solo, third verse, or whatever? What counts as good enough to support as an individual song performance?

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I agree with this distinction. A (self-bestowed) privilege of the SYF blog is that I can excise anything bad or bland and highlight anything great - amateur Tao Macero Grateful Dead, which I stand behind as a useful role. However, I don't see any official or fan effort aspiring to an identification of as-performed/recorded, perfect/canonical song-takes, which is arguably more important, 30 years after Garcia's death.

The compilation that inaugurated the Save Your Face mixtape blog in 2016 was a compilation of 26 Hunter/Garcia compositions, selected from a dozen 1972-1974 archival live releases… every song practically perfect in every way.

I’ve recently been digging around in another era’s tapes for a mix of immaculate performances of H/G songs, while also spinning this 72-74 anthology to keep me honest.

The mix isn’t available to stream, but it persists as an mp3 download:
