@caravan @rowjimmy The "Stella Blue" in the 2nd set of 3/21/94 is an all-timer.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@caravan Yeah, the 30 year mark is wild. Until six years ago, I hadn't heard any 1992-1995 Dead since my last show in the spring of '93.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@caravan What was your '94 show?

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@caravan I don't know the '94 Giants Stadium shows (AUD only), and '92 is still a murky zone for me. I was also into Phish at the time. My first Phish show was two months before my last Dead show! Henry Kaiser was playing Dark Star and Mason's Children at the time. Mazzy Star. Supergrass.

Grateful Dead ’94 Highlights #2
Dylan Covers

If you’re looking for a way into appreciating the sound and character of 1994 , I strongly suggest you start with this mix.

These Dylan covers foreground and benefit from the generally lighter touch that characterizes 1993-1994.

If you can embrace the band’s sound here, you’ll be ready to appreciate a great ’94 version of your favorite Dead song.

Grateful Dead: Tones (1969)

What's the earliest instance of “space” territory in music? Possibly “feedback,” but I like to put my finger on the quieter tones, drones, and knob-twiddling that followed feedback in 1969. I think you can find descendants of these classical-music-inflected tones all the way to the Dead’s final show in 1995.

Here’s an anthology of 14 passages from 1969 - 35 minutes:

@mrcompletely It's so great. Jarnow prompted me to do 1969 feedback, and I ended up embracing only the moody conclusions. Ambient jams of the first order! A mood. A distinct Dead zone that came and went. There's a sequel mix if you need it!

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Absolutely late night music. Since concocting it, I've pretty much listened to it in that context.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @mrcompletely I think that this has been my purpose, somewhat accidental. Not being a Dead scholar, but rather constructing listening experiences that disclose something about Dead music in an easy to experience format.

@bourgwick @mrcompletely I already know one of these collages! I so love constructions like this, and they must be preserved. Do you two ever listen to Lethem's "Radio Free Aftermath" radio show, which always has an extended collage passage - the "Aftermath" segment?

4CPcomics,

@bourgwick The Garcia Peoples tape is great, though I'm not sure exactly what I'm listening to.

Grateful Dead
Garcia sings the Hunter/Garcia Songbook
September 1987

Is there any time between 1980 and 1995 when Jerry Garcia was singing as magnificently as he did in the Fall of 1987?

17 knockout performances.

Hey now, here’s a no-brainer follow for Deadheads: @DeadStudies

The feed compiles numerous Dead-related accounts that offer rich information and paths down many wormholes. If you’re looking for more than inspirational Monday morning “Ripple” quotes and unannotated links to random shows played on this day, you’ll be delighted by the places you end up.

I gave mid-1970s live CAN my highest rating this week by upgrading to physical copies of these revelatory releases. You like improv? You like grooves? You appreciate the German take on the 1970s? A feast awaits you.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Agreed. Truly revelatory to me, comparable to not knowing that King Crimson was a 1973-1974 jam band until the "Great Deceiver" box came out, around 1990. Revisions to the "tradition and the individual talent" account.

Listening tonight to improvisation from Texas in November 1972 (Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas). The explosion of jazz Dead immediately following Pigpen’s departure is a peak season for me - a disciplined band lighting out for the territories. It is a shame so many Fall 1972 tapes are terrible.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely You might have a better bead on the status of the Texas improv than I do. I don't have a take that differentiates it from September or December 1972. Or that puts something else closer to electric Miles. I'd love to hear your extended take on all these things.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely This sounds totally plausible!

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely A subplot of my non-expert SYF mix-notes is that I think they mostly came out vacations best equipped for the open spaces - just happy to be back together - but that most such moments were also breaks in the improv continuum.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely 1972-1975 Dead parsing/annotation/mixtaping is probably the most important place Head geekdom can go, in terms of inserting Grateful Dead music into new ears, where it will likely flourish.
