50 years ago tonight, the in . another wonderfully articulated mix with classic jams, though skipped on “dick’s picks 14.” late fall ’73, show , with a fun little bit of the soundcheck. https://archive.org/details/gd1973-12-01.sbd.miller.112205.flac16 [1/5]

@bourgwick If you've ever wondered what an instrumental WRS Prelude > Part 1 would sound like, I tried that edit out for this show's version and it worked really well.

@bourgwick This is so cool! I totally missed the remixing tool. Having a great time with it now!

@mrcompletely @bourgwick How do you capture web-based sounds traveling through your computer? I seem to have no way to select "internal sound card" (or whatever) as an input for my audio software.

@mrcompletely @bourgwick What software is needed to create mixes with stems?

@mrcompletely @bourgwick This is ecstatically great. The heavens open!

Here’s Weather Report Prelude > Part 1 noodled to become a pedal steel and organ conversation.

Vocals, drums, and Rhodes omitted. Pedal steel and organ raised up in the mix, plus the volume of each manually equalized to amplify the quiet parts of each, so they stay paired.

GRATEFUL DEAD QUESTION

Excluding 1965-1967, 1975, and 1995, what are the four (4) calendar years of Grateful Dead you have listened to the least, across your entire life?

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I'd be curious about a 90-minute 1992 live album. I've bounced off that year multiple times, via dipping into shows.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I guess I'm curious about the perspective of someone for whom every year, 1968-1991, would beat out every year that followed. For me, there's a new situation in the final years whose best sounds I'll readily trade for some earlier years.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Right there with you!

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I respect the process, and I'm the last person to suggest that listening to all of 1994 is a good idea - while also being a person who is glad he did, in terms of the resulting mixes.

You say you’re a fan of really drifty, diffuse Dark Stars from 1973-1974, wherein the band flows like cloud forms, and Bill Kreutzman may be the subtlest jazz drummer you’ve ever heard?

Here are two hours of Dark Star passages like that.

@mrcompletely @hikeofthemenrys I scratched every Dead itch I could think over a pretty short period. It is cool that the result is a basket of Easter eggs for people to keep discovering.

On 2/24/71, Grateful Dead launched into Bertha with an uncharacteristically funky riff.

I've looped that riff, and someone ought to use it as a sample to build on.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I love the "lopey" groove at that time, a zone they took quite a few songs into during the summer of '74. When I made a mix based on that vibe, I used the Bertha from 7/27/74 - also an opener and very similar to the 8/4 version.

Grateful Dead: Clementine 1968-1969

This mix provides a full hour of Clementine, as played by several Grateful Dead configurations in 1968 and early 1969. It was the band’s first jazz jam, a Phil Lesh waltz possibly inspired by John Coltrane’s famous take on “My Favorite Things.”

I believe I have included every recorded version, except for the officially-released 8/13/68 studio jam (AOXOMOXOA bonus track).

The Grateful Dead's approach to releasing music is really off the rails: "It's all delivered with such precision that we've had to come up with some overtime for disc three. There you'll find 75+ minutes of music from the Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, MO, 10/24/70, with the rest of the show due sometime in the near future."

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I'm referring to splitting a show up across multiple releases.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

So why not save that 1970 material for its own stand-alone releases, versus using the same show as filler on two unrelated releases?

To your earlier point, they do all they can to make buying the physical product less attractive (just get FLACs!): They all look alike, the liner notes are typically very weak, and you can't even shelve the material on them chronologically.

Because this platform lets me, I’m posting this edit of “Eyes of the World” from a generally terrible Spring 1994 Florida run. With the vocal sections surgically removed, it still runs to more than 17 minutes. What do you call this? Grateful Dead yacht rock? Garcia is never bored or boring, the collective groove is snug, but nothing really changes throughout. It is possibly the widest expanse of pleasing Dead wallpaper music I’ve ever found.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Curious about the freak/muso demographics of platforms. Youtube records the most enthusiasm for my curations/provocations/unlikely-endorsements, followed (distantly) by the SYF blog itself, and then twitter. The Deadhead cluster on Mastodon is sleepy, based on my corner of it and my attempts to provoke.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I totally appreciate the categorical position, but if one of the demographic targets is Deadheads generally (and potentially a concentration of them), then I feel justified in calling out the lack of chatter. Chatter is, IMO, the gold standard of any Dead scene.

- resuming going through a giant pile of & records i inherited via @4CPComics. especially enjoying pete's lullabies on side A & adelaide van wey's 3 with zither. i don't often endorse discogs over scholarly discographies, but this is pretty much useless, despite dunaway's wonderful seeger bio. incomplete track lists, no credits for collaborators, zero attempt to establish session dates, much oy. on the other hand, A+ sticker placement.
