Because this platform lets me, I’m posting this edit of “Eyes of the World” from a generally terrible Spring 1994 Florida run. With the vocal sections surgically removed, it still runs to more than 17 minutes. What do you call this? Grateful Dead yacht rock? Garcia is never bored or boring, the collective groove is snug, but nothing really changes throughout. It is possibly the widest expanse of pleasing Dead wallpaper music I’ve ever found.

Boy, it's really fun to shoot the shit with Deadheads on Mastodon!

LET’S DISCUSS 1990s GRATEFUL DEAD!

Week 1: Thematic Jamming Part One

Assigned Listening: “Terraplayin’ Jams (1993-1994)”

Questions for discussion:

  1. How does the assigned listening confirm or disrupt your take on late period Dead?

  2. Garcia suffered lyrical lapses and guitar dexterity difficulties in this period. When listening to these isolated, song-free, “Terraplayin’ Jams,” what is your assessment of the band’s lead guitarist? Is he struggling to express himself or lead the plot?

(2/3)

  1. What’s your assessment of the tightness and nimbleness of the band as a whole?

  2. The keyboard player is Vince Welnick. How well does he do in these wide open spaces?

  3. Should the 1990’s distinctive “Terrapin Jam” be considered a canonical Dead thematic jam?

@mrcompletely Thank you for confirming the accuracy of this music/color association.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I emphatically vote yes on that question. I don't know how you could argue against it. It's the final, fully-developed, full-band, thematic jam, IMO.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I need guidance on this. I've found numerous Corrina jams that I love, but I haven't perceived it as an effortless "zone." If there's a period/tour where it's the secret pocket, I'd love to know about it.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely You may be right, but I accept the challenge, will listen more, and see where I come out. When I first encountered it, I ID'ed it as reprise/variation of the "Playin' Jam" of the mid-'90s.

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

Really? Nobody here wants to listen to some Grateful Dead and discuss?

4CPcomics,
@4CPcomics@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely No, you're on board and appreciated! Just surprised that there's not more enthusiasm for having a listening/discussion event here.

A brand new "Save Your Face" Grateful Dead mixtape experiment. Seven mighty Shakedown Streets from 1979, mutated into instrumental versions. Disco Dead doesn't get any better (sorry 1977).

Still unreleased! Grateful Dead 8/1/73 Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ. If you haven't listened to the hour that starts with Dark Star in a while...

@mrcompletely Just listened to this version. You're right - an absolutely peak melodrama for this song. Script and music for an episode of a silent western serial. Bobby sings the intertiles and the band soundtracks it.

For your convenience: The three recent, astounding, archival CAN live 1975-1976 releases, with the 1975 and 1977 live tracks from “Can Box” threaded in. Top tier jam band, or improv prog band, or jazz-funk band, or whatever.

@mrcompletely I was a moderate CAN fan when these came out - I had NO idea! Similar to when King Crimson's "Great Deceiver" came out - wait, KC was a jam band?!

@mrcompletely When these archival releases were coming out, Liebezeit-astonishment seemed to be the most common reaction.

Too much navel gazing on this platform. Debating the merits of numerous blogging platforms, rather than blogging interesting content, is smooth brain behavior.

This was harsh - sorry. Twitter is obviously worse in this respect.

@mrcompletely I've been in the same place, in different ways, at times in my life. The making of a thing being almost more fascinating than what the thing is ultimately for.

standing & saluting, sam cutler has left the building. the 's chief tour architect from 1970-1974 (& the ' road manager in '69), sam helped turn the dead from an underground band into a wild success. a charming rogue & ace storyteller, his memoir "you can't always get what you want" is very recommended. sam was also a regular deadcast guest/correspondent. i'm going to miss him a lot.

Sam Cutler with Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh (& Sonny Heard), 1971

The new Summer 1973 Grateful Dead boxed set brushes up against the brief flourishing of what's come to be known as "The Phil Jazz Jam." It's probably as close as the band ever came to an organized approach to a Davis/Coltrane zone. This is my favorite version (6/24/73 Portland).

Following this conversation, I've had 7/16-17/76 (Orpheum, SF) in my car, via Dave's Picks 18.

After a long time of barely listening to the year, I'm happy to be reunited with the easy-going/sleepy/careful playing, as well as the vocal qualities we discussed.

I had a lot of '76 tapes in my early going, so I'm also getting great Proustian whiffs of my life ~35 years ago.
