Procrastination has just reached a new level: I'm reading a book instead of learning.

7331,

@sigmasternchen i'm even better at procrastinating, i write code to procrastinate from studying and i study to procrastinate from having to fix that one bug

7331,

@sigmasternchen but honestly reading a book to procrastinate is such a vibe
i'm currently reading a book but i only ever read it when i should be doing something else but don't have the nerves to do so

Tired of this: "learn C so you can understand how a computer really works."

So much of modern computers is not visible from C (pipelining, virtual memory, branch prediction, cache misses, etc).

I guess what they mean is, "you learn about pointers and consecutive memory locations"? How is that helpful for programming in other languages without pointers?

C teaches you an abstraction of computers based on the PDP-11. It's interesting, but it's not essential.

7331,

@nedbat
But how is someone going to understand all of these if they don't even know how memory works?
Since you like to bring up Python as an example, for all a Python programmer knows their objects might just be floating around in space. Heck, it's entirely possible to program in Python without even knowing what the difference between an unsigned 32 bit integer or a float is.

7331,

@nedbat
You might want to recheck your original post to find out why having data and being able to manipulate it, while surely being very important features for a programming language to have, don't really help with learning about how computers work. Excel spreadsheets also contain data that can be manipulated.

7331,

@nedbat
So we moved the goalpost from "learning about how computers work" to "being productive with computers"?

decided 4 stacks are enough. 1 main for all the operations, 1 secondary for things that need swapping around stuff and 2 general purpose stacks. How many more could you need ?

my kernel is getting along pretty well
today i finally got done with an actual multitasking/scheduling implementation and a first re-entrant main loop for my kernel where new tasks are continuously scheduled and executed
there are still a few untested things but i'll test/debug them tomorrow and get some well-deserved rest today

it's crazy how it's even possible to feel as isolated and lonely as i do, even with more means of communication available to me than there have ever been..

The problem with journalists is that they come here without knowing anything about our culture and expect this place to be just Twitter. So when people here attack the mainstream corporate social media, they see it as an attack to the "open web", because the corporate mainstream social media is all they know. And then they say what they say and expect to get away with it because they think this is twitter.

This isnt twitter. We dont like the FAANG, or any corpo/conglomerate/whatever. We have a different culture. We dont consume. We are not a product, like you. And we dont want corpos capitalizing and making a profit out of our network.
