Because Linux isn’t really one thing. If the kernel developers do something bad, just fork the kernel and remove it.

Nfts are bragging rights, like having an original painting. You get to show people you have money by spending it on something extravagant but basically useless.

Concrete and steel production accounts for around 20% of co2 emissions, so it’s not only oil and gas companies (although it is still mostly from oil and gas companies).

I unsubscribed to show them how seriously I take the issues. If they improve and the investigation succeeds, I will resubscribe. And I did enjoy LTT, which is why I was subscribed.

My impression was that the linux video was meant to be more of a vlog “Watch Linus Do Something” style and not a researched video. And its obvious that he would know very little about an operating system he has never used before.

they’re one of the biggest tech channels on youtube, and the biggest gaming focused tech channel. A lot of people looked up to them, including myself. In a few days I’m sure the discussion will die down.

It wasn’t knowingly fudging numbers, they mentioned in the video that it was not designed for the gpu.

AdrianTheFrog,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

None of that was knowingly though, it was accidental and the concern is just the frequency and inadequate response.

People need to see more of the world. Many are too isolated in their specific culture.

Superconducter maglevs are feasible and have been in service for years. They are building a large line in Japan.

All computer science papers are released on arXiv before publishing. It’s pretty normal.

AdrianTheFrog,

It sounds like the full line will eventually go across most of Japan and operate in the same way as the test track, however it is expected to be very expensive, and room temperature superconductors would likely lower the cost.

Obeying all of the laws of physics, magic wouldn't work at all. Assuming you were able to break a few but kept some such as conservation of energy, it would be very powerful, ex: teleportation does not break conservation of energy as long as you teleport to the same height you left from. If you were able to extract energy from your surroundings, you could probably do basically anything you want. You could lower the sun's heat by a degree and be able to move a mountain.

AdrianTheFrog,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

No, if you were just worried about energy, you would be much less tired than by doing things manually. For example, moving a heavy object downhill would gain you energy, not lose it, and keeping a heavy object in the air would neither gain nor lose energy. it would only be lifting that is hard, and it would still be easier than lifting manually.

Edit: and according to Wikipedia, human muscles only have an efficiency of around 20%, so doing basically anything through magic would be 5x easier than doing it by hand.

if the part of your body losing the mass was actually completely random, the atoms would disappear roughly evenly across your body, so probably the main thing you have to be worried about is your DNA (and thus getting cancer).

Looks good, but I think it looks better in all caps like in the original.

There is a reason why American cheese is called a "pasteurized prepared cheese product", using various terms in food is heavily regulated.

Did the reddit hivemind do a 180 or are the people left behind just the people who don't care.

Prior to the protest reddit was in full support of the protest. Most polls on subs supported a shutdown. Now, seemingly every community cant understand why the protest was needed and they're calling it a mod power trip. There is a 3rd possibility. This is an unfounded conspiracy but reddit themselves could be manipulating...

YSK That if you delete your lemmy account, your comments/posts made on other instances will remain there forever.

So say I make an account on lemmy.world and post a bunch of stupid comments around other instances then decide to delete my account because I'm ashamed of them. After I delete my account, a copy of all those comments I made on other instances remain on those instances as a "shadow copy." There isn't any way to actually delete...
