I ranked 20 bathtub scenes from the movies! This was a lot of fun to do. (Eat your heart out, Saltburn.) https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/jan/11/the-20-best-bathtub-scenes-ranked

AnneBillson,

@arratoon Thanks! For the past four years I had a bathtub and I think I took only two baths in all that time; mostly it's showers, and now I've moved to a flat without a tub anyway. Can't remember when I last had a bubble bath.

Look, it's me! And Ava! In the January programme for Antwerpen's De Cinema, where I'll be introducing (in English, alas; my Dutch is still pants) one of my all-time top ten films from Sight & Sound's 2022 poll: Peter Weir's MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD.

AnneBillson,

@arratoon I don't think you'll regret it! I could easily have watched another three hours of it.

Happy Psycho Day to all who celebrate.

@arratoon There's a Waterstone's in Brussels. Also both Brussels branches of Fnac have English language sections, I think.

    AnneBillson,

@arratoon I was prepared to loathe it, but (rather to my annoyance) found it grand entertainment, much more fun than expected. Stone is great, and I was also very impressed with Joel Fry - there's some real poignancy there.

Happy birthday Stephen King. Here he is in 1983, encountering a fish-paste sandwich in the tea room at Brown's hotel, London. (Photographs by Anne Billson)

Don't normally drink beer before a film in case I need to go for a pee in the middle, but as Pedro Almodóvar's STRANGE WAY OF LIFE is only 31 minutes long I am permitting myself an Orval in the relative coolth of the foyer at Cartoon's bioscoop.

    AnneBillson,

@arratoon Yes! You have to approach epic-length films with the discipline of a monk/nun unless you don't mind missing five minutes in the middle.

    AnneBillson,

@arratoon YES! Last film I saw with an intermission was RRR.

After many heartrending sacrifices & gruelling treks, laden like a sherpa, to boekhandels, kringwinkels & Oxfam shops, these are the only books left to me: double-shelved & in no kind of order. Now to get rid of surplus Billies & bring those cardboard boxes up from the kelder.

    AnneBillson,

@arratoon I said to myself: I LOVE this book, it's one of my favourites, but will I read it again before I die? Probably not (I'm nearly 70...). And if I REALLY want to reread it, I’ll just have to buy it again. Plus nowadays I tend to read novels on my kindle (especially French ones, because you can look up words instantly). On the other hand, I have way WAY too many big, heavy art books. (The main incentive - I will soon be moving to a much smaller - but nicer - flat.)
