This is some Idiocracy shit, I feel like this’ll be the vernacular in the next 20-30 years. Hopefully an asteroid wipes us out first.

Why not use the discord chat to discuss in real time?

Sorry if I’m missing something, just joined and looked over the rules and I saw that we’re only to use chat to discuss stream issues and the discussion is over here on Lemmy. Why not use the discord chat to discuss in real time instead of having to deal with the delay of posting comments?

Thanks for the post @canthidium! My main purpose for starting this community is to drive user engagement and discussion on Lemmy. Discord would work just fine for discussing a movie in real time, but I don’t want to gatekeep that discussion behind Discord for those that don’t use or want that application. Lemmy is the discussion platform we all have in common. Streaming the movie on Discord is just an option that’s available to the host (or another watch party member) for the benefit of those that don’t have access to a copy of the movie, but would still like to watch and join in on the discussion.

TL;DR Discord is just a means to an end of driving engagement and discussion on Lemmy.

[Self Promo] Watch Party - A Community for Lemmy to Watch and Discuss Movies Together!

I came up with the idea for this community in the shower. What if I want to watch a movie with people from all over the world, and talk about it in a live thread? Live threads for sporting events and TV shows are pretty common, but I don’t think I’ve seen it applied to movies before. The concepts are simple:...

Great post, I love Edge of Tomorrow! Here’s my first stab at a list, in no particular order.

  • Hot Fuzz (2007)
  • Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
  • Cocaine Bear (2023)
  • Battleship (2012)
  • Shawshank Redemption (1994)
  • Almost Heroes (1998)

I’m going to expand the time frame to post an announcement from 6-12 hours to 2-12 hours. This would provide some flexibility if you’ve got some unexpected free time, or you’re just in the mood to host a party on somewhat short notice. I’m also going to expand the time frame for creating the live thread from 1 hour prior to show time, to 30-60 minutes prior. We’ll see how those changes play out, I think it provides a balance of enough time for people to join in on the conversation if they want to, but not too short of a notice that that they’re going to have to scramble to find the movie and just throw their hands up in frustration.

What the actual fuck, this is like the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Personally, I’ll probably start hosting weekly watch parties on Tuesday nights for now to get the ball rolling. Being based in the US, Monday and Thursday night, as well as Sundays probably won’t see a lot of engagement once football season starts. I’m open to feedback on tweaking the rules some, is announcing a watch party 6-12 hours in advance too little notice? I’m not sure, should it be 24 hours? I also plan on cross-posting the watch party announcements to a couple of the larger movie communities to increase visibility. This is all still a work in progress, and new territory for me. I don’t think I ever saw this live thread concept applied to movies on Reddit, but I think it’s got potential if people like it and start hosting their own watch parties as well.

Hosting the first one was kind of anxiety inducing, but a few people did join in on the Starship Troopers live thread, so it beat my expectations, which was zero haha. My advice is to pick a fun movie you haven’t watched in at least six months, or a movie you’ve heard really good stuff about, and just jump in and host a watch party. Two of the bigger movie communities with lots of subscribers are !moviesandtv and !movies. If you cross-post your watch party announcement there, that’ll generate some interest and some may join the live thread and/or subscribe to this community for further watch parties. Just don’t cross post the live thread, as that’ll fragment the conversation between the different communities. It’ll be a little bit like talking to the wall at first in the live thread until more people get in on the action, and that’s okay, just have fun!

I’ve commented more here than I did the past 9 years on Reddit. I also created Watch Party, where people can watch a movie together and discuss it in a live thread, similar to sporting events. Starship Troopers was the proof of concept, and it was a fun time. I’m hoping it’ll gain some more traction in the coming months and encourage anyone to check out the pinned “Getting Started” post if you’re interested in hosting a watch party as well.

I fucking love that show, I spent a lot of late nights as a kid cracking up to their commentary. There’s a MST3K channel on Pluto.tv that’s got a decent selection of reruns.

You know what, I kind of like that better than eastern time. It’s a worldwide platform, and the time should be universal. Would you recommend the 12 hour format (1:00 PM) or the 24 hour format (13:00)?
