My best READMEs are the ones I write well before I’ve finished the code. The README bears little resemblance to reality, but it’s the easiest to read.

I don’t download games, I mostly have to install stuff from work.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah, I should have specified. I really only use the Play Store for work or fast food if I’m on the road. Otherwise I stick to F-Droid.

Oh, I hadn’t thought of Tux Racer in ages. I think I need to play that again.

I’ve been trying to remember but it hasn’t come back to me. It was a 2D, top down, space battle game. Its possible it wasn’t named after Star Trek, but you pilot a grey ship with a saucer section and nacelles to fire torpedoes and phasers at green bird of prey looking ships so…

We are not. When I want a cubic desktop environment I reach(ed) for BeOS.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

No, but it was my gateway into Netrek.

That all sounds very familiar. The one I played was full color but it must have either been a late version of Empire or something heavily “inspired” by it.

I use linux because, in the 90s, Redhat shipped with a Star Trek game. We are not the same.

Officially I work 8 hours of my choice between 7am and 7pm with 30 minutes lunch.

In practice I work at least 8 hours (most often about 8.5), usually get a lunch, have to be at my desk at 8:30 for standup, and am always on call to some degree. If any of our infrastructure isn’t working then I am, but after hours stuff isn’t all that common.

My university really liked to tout its Carnegie 1 classification to bring in donor money, then instead of using that money to fund the research needed to maintain it they’d use it to pay off debts for athletics.

People will get their money back and their kids, and grandkids, and great grandkids, and great great grandkids will all get to enjoy all the ewaste. Everyone wins!

Subreddits were added in 08. The great Digg migration was 2010. I feel old.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Same. I also remember when everyone moved to Digg from Stumbleupon

My local BBS was great, but when the provider became an ISP, the BBS became a ghost town because everyone went to IRC and Usenet.

That ISP was also the local jerky company. Dad made the Jerky, son ran the modem pool. I miss the 90s.

The one stipulation I’d put on living forever is the ability to change with the universe.

Sure, if you’re a god that changes things. Otherwise I’d live in fear of the eternity that is still left after there’s nothing left to experience. In a couple hundred billion years all the stars will be dead. In a trillion years all mater will have decayed into iron and be so spread out that you could never get from one lump of iron to the next even at superluminal speed. A trillion years is the blink of an eye compared to forever.

Bishma,

There is nothing that could be done to make me want to live for eternity. Do you know what’s boring after a billion years? Everything. Do you know how many billions are in infinity? All of them.

Eternity means that one day you’ll outlive the last black hole and you’ll be the only thing in a universe with, effectively, nothing but your imagination to keep you busy.

Everything’s shiny, captain. Not to fret.

I found I can wiggle my ears enough to walk my glasses back up my nose when they’ve slipped down.

If I press on the corners of my eye it forces air down my naso-lacrimal duct (that lets tears drain into our sinuses) and it makes a squeak loud enough for people sitting next to be to hear. I have a built in nose flute.

Tony Todd needs to be in all the things. He is such a brilliant actor that I even looked forward to Kurn episodes, unlike any other Worf’s family story lines.

I can sort of see the appeal, but its not for me. If anything is ever going to rename files for me its going to be a script that I’ve either written or at least read top to bottom. Not a blackbox inference engine, and especially not one based on an LLM.

If we’re anthropomorphizing photons, lets imagine how it experienced time. Most of those 93 million miles was instantaneous. Then for the the tiniest fraction of a second you’re screaming through thickening atmosphere before hitting someone and making a cone in their eye dance around like one of those fan powered air dancers at a used car lot. Maybe you even bounced off one those fan powered air dancers at a used car lot.

I loved him when he was a model on Boe.
