today I've heard for the first time about the open-source screen reader project for written in . Unfortunately only Readme has an English version, all other documents and code comments are in chinese, but the project seems very promising. Use Google Translate or another translator if you, like me, don't speak Chinese. https://gitcode.net/mzdk100/rigela

Bri,

@menelion What's interesting about it? How far along is it?

Bri,

@menelion I successfully built it, and it runs and is pretty fast, but none of it is currently in english.

Bri,

@menelion Oh, yeah I did see that, but only after I restarted NVDA to see what the UI elements were.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion Yeah, I have no idea what I did, but now, somehow, the tab key, yes, the Tab! Key, launches instances of the program. WTF.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes great, but it's just as good as fuckware if it's binding itself to tab, what the serious fuck

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion oh I've tried exiting many different, clean and dirty, ways. It's hacked into Windows itself somehow and bound a shortcut to the tab key, somewhere, fuck knows where.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion OK. Solved it. I think that's quite enough excitement for one day.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion I told it to create a desktop shortcut. When you do that, it asks you to put in a shortcut key you want to assign, so I told it tab. Then, I went to that shortcut and fucked the shortcut off.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion still don't know how in the serious fuck it did it the first time though, because there was no shortcut there before.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes Yeah, so it did it again. Definitely don't fuck around with this. It'll jack your shit.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes Best of luck. My experience just now spooked me bad enough that I'm staying far, far far away.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes OK, next time, VM. LOL.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes you'd think that in the many years I've been online, I would've learned not to just run shit on my host, but alas.

Bri,

@menelion @jscholes same, but after this, I think you underestimate how bad this particular instance freakd me out. A program just blindly generating an lnk somewhere bound to the tab key. Yikes.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion nods, I didn't really suspect foul play, but scary none the less.

Bri,

@jscholes @menelion I think my major problem was that I didn't figure out how to change the language until I'd already majorly fucked it up.

It's got to be one of the most annoying feelings in the world when you wake up and an ear is clogged up for no reason that you can think of and you can't get it to clear out.

Bri,

@MS26 Oh god that always freaks me way way beyond way the fuck out. Like no no no no no get the fuck away from me stupid ear problems stop existing immediately.

Bri,

@MS26 oh for me my absolutely everything is borked when my ears aren't working at 100%.

So when did Firefox start majorly sucking? This is not cool. This is the third time in the past two weeks that I've had it just stop sending half of all accessibility events to my screen reader for absolutely no reason. Text fields don't read and tabbing only reads when NVDA's focus/browse mode state changes. Only way to fix it seems to be to hard exit the browser like 15 times and then maybe it'll work eventually possibly at some point. It's also been really, really slow. Like, when I open a firefox instance, type something in the address bar, and press enter, I get chrome://browser/content/blanktab.html for at least 10 seconds until the page finally loads. Visiting other links and such in the same tab after that is plenty responsive, it seems to be when a new tab is opened. I hate how chromified everything is now, but if Firefox keeps doing this, I may jump ship.

Bri,

@sparksexist @TheQuinbox Yeah. This has been happening to me too for the past few days.

Bri,

@TheQuinbox @ysotomayor @sparksexist Yeah. My web browser is basically unusable on certain websites now. Ugh.

What are people using to read audiobooks on Windows? I've transitioned almost entirely over to mobile reading apps, but occasionally I wonder if I'd get more things done if I wasn't constantly switching devices, and I am on Windows a lot. Also, I sometimes encounter people who like to use their computer for various reasons.
I know Foobar has a bookmarks plugin, and I know about Easy Reader, though I don't know if the Windows version does audiobooks or whether it's an actual good experience. Ideally, something that supports folders of audio files as well as M4B books would be great. And Foobar is the only thing I know that does that. There's a bookmarks plugin, but I'm not sure if it's maintained. That would probably suffice for me, except there's no good time compression in Foobar.

Bri,

@simon @jscholes audioserve? Do tell?

does anyone know if there is a newer site for the NVDA comunity than the one I have? the NVDA addon store is a good thing, but I like to keep the file around for addons in case I need to reinstall NVDA. I don't want to have to search the store for the ones I want to use. I just want to install them, and go about my day. sadly the site I am using mothing is up to date at all. for example, I know unigram has been updated, however if I go to https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/unigramPlus.en.html
this is the version I see.
UnigramPlus
• Author: Kostya Gladkiy (Ukrain)
• Download stable version (Compatible with NVDA 2021.2 to 2023.1).
if someone could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

Bri,

@Jonathan @JamminJerry Oh wow. I just updated a literal shit ton of add-ons.

Bri,

@JamminJerry @Jonathan Yeah, the add-on is actually in English tough.

Bri,

@JamminJerry @Jonathan it has a shit ton more add-ons.
