I’d like the Steam Machine to come back with the addition of being an HTPC. Why? Because Valve is big enough to arm wrestle streaming services into releasing an official app.

I basically want a user customizable, privacy respecting Xbox.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

What you, @crawancon and @mipadaitu are missing is a TV isn’t necessarily a single user item.

Deck hooked to the TV to play a game? Great…now what happens when you leave and someone else wants to play?

The problem gets even more obvious if you use the Deck as an HTPC to stream content. How does anyone watch a show once the deck has gone walkabout?

Why Ukraine Should Keep Striking Russian Oil Refineries (www.foreignaffairs.com)

Washington’s criticism is misplaced: attacks on oil refineries will not have the effect on global energy markets that U.S. officials fear. These strikes reduce Russia’s ability to turn its oil into usable products; they do not affect the volume of oil it can extract or export. In fact, with less domestic refining...

@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Why is everyone in here discussing “oil” when the article is talking about oil refining.

Russia was / is a big player in the refined petroleum market and exported a LOT of Diesel, Gasoline, Kerosene and other petroleum distillates.

This distinction is important because oil refineries are multi-billion dollar multi-year projects, they are not built quickly or easily. Most of the world is also refinery constrained, meaning that their existing refineries are already working at or near capacity.

Here’s the capacity utilization data for the United States. As you can see the US has very little slack in its refinery capability so any dip in the ability to import refined petroleum products will, and does, lead to sharp price rises.

So yes, Ukraine blowing up an oil refinery in Russia will absolutely cause global price hikes for refined petroleum products…and I fully support them doing it.

tl;dr Y’all are discussing the wrong thing and “oil” is absolutely not a synonym for the refined petroleum products that come of out of an oil refinery.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

America is a NET EXPORTER of oil.

Big whoop. The article isn’t talking about oil production and it isn’t “oil” that matters; it’s what that oil is refined into that matters and the US doesn’t have the capacity to create much more in the way of refined products like Diesel, Gasoline, Kerosene, etc than it already does. In fact we’ve been importing a LOT of refined petroleum for years now to make up for our lack of refining capacity and pre-invasion much of it was imported from Russia itself!

So when Russian oil refineries suddenly explode and those refined petroleum products are no longer available on the world market the prices go up. This is exactly how you can end up with low oil prices but high gasoline prices. If Russia can’t refine the oil they’ll try and dump it on the market for whatever price they can get but that low cost oil is headed into a refinery system that’s already working at capacity and can’t make anything more than it already does.

I really don’t know where you people are getting your idea of the American electorate.

They get their ideas about the American electorate from their Online and IRL echo chambers.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

AIPAC has paid a lot of money over the course of decades to make it that way.

“For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide.”

I’m shocked I made it to the 3rd Paragraph before I ran into the first set of lies.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

I mean, I’m not a lawyer, but the basic premise seems solid. US has that whole ‘corporations are people’ shtick going on

Sure, and the US Government is quite able to ban people from the country as well.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Lamont v Postmaster General was decided the way it was because it required Dr. Lamont to make a positive and OFFICIAL act in order to receive something through a U.S. Government service.

"We conclude that the Act as construed and applied is unconstitutional because it requires an official act (viz., returning the reply card) as a limitation on the unfettered exercise of the addressee’s First Amendment rights. "

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act requires no official (meaning related to Government) act on the part of the user. A secondary, but still important, consideration for SCOTUS in that case was that the U.S. Mail was an official Government body, that also doesn’t apply.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act may still be struck down but Lamont v Postmaster General is IMO a poor case to use for comparison.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Why would it? The US is well able to ban flesh and blood people from the country so the idea that “Corporations are people” fits perfectly well with the ban. In fact it’s entirely consistent behavior.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Lie 1 - It’s not about a “single” platform but any owned and operated by a list of “Adversary” nations.

Lie 2 - It’s not permanent. The ban, such as it, can be lifted and the legislation defines how.

Lie 3 - It doesn’t bar Americans from participating.

Lie 4 - TikTok is in no way a “Unique Community”

Some of you may question my assertions but before you do I encourage you to read the legislation that was actually enacted.

Would they have accepted The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Probably. Scouting America has been openly Deist for a long time and there is an official “Event” for Christians, Muslims, and Jews. So at least at the national level they don’t seem to care what Deity you jam too as long as you have one.

Buelldozer,

Girls were welcomed in six years ago. The first group of Girl “Eagle Scouts” came about in 2021.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Why “Scouting America” and not “Scouts of America” without the gender prefix?

I’d guess it’s because “Girl Scouts” still exists so if the BSA renamed to “Scouts of America” it would look like they were in charge of everything. That would surely confuse the hell out of people, piss off the Girl Scouts and up creating a serious fuss.

It’s surprising to me how often high profile Democrats, who really should know better, make racially stereotyped comments like this.

It doesn’t seem unusual. DVD is in the process of being replaced by something better.

VHS > DVD > Blu-ray > 4K Blu-ray

Buelldozer,

I’m sort of confused by this. Just last week Ukraine announced that they’d start flying F-16s after Orthodox Easter was over…so where are those F-16s coming from?

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

he should have worked with Biden before shutting off anything.

There’s no actual proof that anything was turned off for that attack; there’s a claim that it was but there’s also a claim that the service was never ON around Sevastopol to begin with.

We saw this same kind of twisted press coverage when Starlink started disabling its service over the ground in contested areas of Ukraine; supposedly it was being done to damage Ukraine’s war effort but the truth is that US Federal Law constrains the sale of products and services considered “dual use” and Starlink has to play under those rules.

The US is currently damn grumpy with China for sending “dual use” technology to Russia despite the sanctions so it’s not just something that Musk / Starlink pulled out of their ass in order to shift blame.

Musk is an asshole but I do get tired of the twisted media coverage surrounding Starlink.

EXCLUSIVE: “You Have Been Warned”: Republican Senators Threaten the ICC Prosecutor over Possible Israel Arrest Warrants (zeteo.com)

A group of influential Republican senators has sent a letter to International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan, warning him not to issue international arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, and threatening him with “severe sanctions” if he does so....

France nuking American Aircraft Carriers?!?! At that point there wouldn’t be any need for “boots on the ground” because France would be nothing but glass and smoking craters.

That scenario is literally the end of the world.

Steam HW survey: Mac are 1.35%, Linux 1.90%... but is the industry reacting to this? (store.steampowered.com)

The PC gaming industry (AAA and such) seems more sensible the economy of money around the Apple Platform, for sure. But we’re talking about iOS gaming… not exactly what keep the industry busy with complex technologies like RayTracing, cutting edge PBR textures and gigallion of cinematic rendered Quadruple-A art assets....

we’ll essentially see Valve vs. Microsoft, as the former would much rather not have to rely on Windows

Valve has been working on exactly that for a decade now. It’s why they created SteamOS, Steam Machines, and Proton. The current high point of all that work is the Steam Deck but it’s possible we could see an official return of console like Steam Machines.

The underlying problem is if games stop getting Windows releases and instead go directly to Xbox / PlayStation / Nintendo consoles only.

So this is a system-wide DNS hijack for the purpose of filtering and monitoring?

It shifts DNS from Default Allow to Default Deny. AD DNS should have had this two decades ago.

So say an attacker can enable this service

If an attacker has already penetrated your Network Infrastructure to the point that they can setup ZTDNS you’ve already got problems so serious that DNS over TLS with DNSSEC is not going to save you.
