Thanks to Internet Archive, I was able to watch The #Cats of Mirikitani, the beautiful and enriching #documentary by Linda Hattendorf about the artist Jimmy Mirikitani, a citizen of the world and survivor of the Tule Lake #internment camp, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006. https://archive.org/details/cats-of-mirikitani-the/Cats+of+Mirikitani%2C+The+%5B2006+PAL+DVD%5D%5BEn+Subs%5BSv%5D/FullDisc/DEFAULTPAL_SCN/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_2.VOB

Started reading I Love Russia: Reporting from a lost country by Elena Kostyuchenko. Being a queer anti-war Russian myself, this book is important to me, putting in words many hunches I’ve been feeling for years about history, loss, feeling of disorientation and subsequent resentment that led to the present moment. Note that the author is very much against the current administration and its course, and it cost her dearly

Annoyed to see how many people on Goodreads have rated the book 1 star either based on name alone without even reading it, or for it daring to speak with empathy about any Russian :(

@beholderess @bookstodon Loved this book’s ability to explain, condemn, and cherish things on behalf of people.

What thoughts does the crowd have about navigation menus which are not hamburger menus (☰)?

I think websites should be "scannable" with your eyes. Everything should be visible at a glance without clicking or tapping. It should also work without javascript and be generally lightweight.

Back in the old days, navigation used to be on the side, but mobile devices have no room for that. The more modern approach seems to be a navigation bar at the top, but that as well already runs out of space after 2-3 items.

Is seems like the only remaining options are either a list of links, like a table of contents (using <ul>) or a navigation bar that wraps around, like a word cloud or a collection of hashtags.

Are there any other ideas? I'm talking about a moderate amount of 4-8 menu options.

@fell The top horizontal nav bar with, for example, “Item1 Item2 Item3 More” is the best alternative. “More” gives an overlay menu panel with the other nav items.

Google earned $10m from ads misdirecting abortion seekers to ‘pregnancy crisis centers’
    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jun/15/google-misleading-abortion-ads-pregnancy-crisis-centers

    >A study finds the search giant has profited since Roe was overturned from anti-abortion groups buying misleading search terms

@BigAngBlack This pernicious misdirection existed pre-Internet in print. Doesn’t make Google and the advertisers less culpable, though.
