A lot of people are boasting here like "well I just deleted my 15+ year account with quintillion karma."
I'm not going to delete my account yet (but probably won't be posting anything on Reddit either). Instead, I came up with a Strange Hobby.
Because password managers are so ubiquitous and easy to use and everyone should use one, I somehow found a complete list of all Reddit throwaway accounts I had over the years. (You know, from back when you could create accounts in seconds and Reddit didn't make you sign a blood pact or whatever.)
So I've been deleting those accounts. There was a pile of them.
And I like to every time I delete an account, a little siren goes off in Reddit HQ and Spez is like "Aaaaagggh! Not another one!"
Good idea! Also, it’s not always about boasting - putting things into words makes it easier for certain kinds of brain to process them. For some people, the act of leaving snoosite isn’t enough to fully internalise it, they need to say goodbye. Which is fine, btw. :)
Right now I'm having log in problems, along with it showing no content, however if'n I click on communities, the list shows up for a fraction of a second while the page is loading, and then I'm presented a blank page.
I've turned off a few extensions, whitelisted the tab in No Script, and even started in troubleshooting mode, but it hasn't made any difference.
To be able to see the rest of the fediverse (i.e. all the other Lemmy and KBin servers) your home server must be operational, and must "federate" with them.
The admins of each server can decide how much of the rest of the federation (i.e. all the other Lemmy and kbin servers) you can and cannot see. They could choose to just allow everything - however, you will quickly find yourself swamped by abusive and bot accounts. They could also choose to allow nothing, limiting their users to just the one server. Neither of these extremes are optimal, so the admins have to decide where they want to draw the line.
If you are able to find a server owner whose interests, or at least their philosophy, aligns with yours, this will give you the best experience. For example, the server I'm on (lemmy.blahaj.zone) is heavily moderated to create a safe space for LGBTQIA+ people.
I've tried a few different browsers over the years but I always seem to end up coming back to Firefox because of its customisability. I'm not especially bothered about speed, I'm very happy to bog my browser down with more addons than I care to admit to, and leave a ridiculous number of tabs open. No other browser even comes close to allowing me to do such silly things.
I keep looking back at what's happening with Reddit, not because I want to go back, but just morbid curiosity on if they will ever get their head out of their ass. The more I see, the more I feel the move to kbin was the right move. Removing mods, falsifying information, lying, deception, and just not listening to the community. Not only that, just looking at the content post blackout and it isn't the same anymore.
The amount of gaslighting I've seen over there is crazy. There's a real narcissism problem happening. I deleted my account yesterday and installed Redirector this morning, and haven't regretted it. Hopefully we can all make a home here. :)
